BYU will aim to bounce back from a 38-27 loss at Kansas in its Big 12 opener. After three nonconference victories, including a 38-31 win at Arkansas, BYU became the latest team to be unable to slow the Jayhawks' high-powered attack. The Cougars led 17-14 at halftime but gave up the advantage only 22 seconds into the second half on a pick-six before yielding lengthy scoring drives on Kansas' first three offensive possessions of the half. BYU quarterback Kedon Slovis completed 30 of 51 passes for 357 yards with two scores and two interceptions. The Cougars (3-1, 0-1 Big 12) got nothing from their ground game (22 attempts, 9 yards) and allowed 6 yards per carry to the Jayhawks. Slovis has thrown for 1,017 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions in four games, relying on the trio of Chase Roberts, Isaac Rex and Darius Lassiter. They have a combined 52 catches and five scores.

Neither Pittsburgh nor Miami had a projected starter for any of the three games this weekend. The Pirates' two bona fide starters the past several weeks, Mitch Keller and Johan Oviedo, pitched in Philadelphia and are considered to be done for the year. A quasi third starter, Luis L. Ortiz, started Thursday. Pittsburgh has been going with an opener plus a bulk-innings pitcher often, and that's a strong possibility for these games. It looks like it will be Cabrera (Miami) vs. Priester (Pitt)

Attempting to prevent Cabrera from adding to his gaudy numbers Sunday will be A's left-hander JP Sears (5-12, 4.52 ERA), who saw a three-game winning streak end in a 5-0 defeat to Seattle on Monday. Sears arguably threw his best game of the season in his team's 1-0 win at Detroit in July, limiting the Tigers to five hits over a career-high 7 1/3 innings without allowing a walk. It was his only previous head-to-head with the Tigers. Seeking a series split, the Tigers (72-83) are expected to counter with fellow lefty Eduardo Rodriguez (11-9, 3.57), who was bombed for five runs in four innings in a 12-3 home loss to the A's in July, an outing in which he served up home runs to Ryan Noda and Shea Langeliers. Rodriguez will make his 10th career start against the A's, having gone 2-4 with a 4.56 ERA in the previous nine.

Right-hander Charlie Morton (14-12, 3.66 ERA) will be Atlanta's starter on Friday night as he aims for his first victory this month. He won in his final four starts of August before going 0-2 so far in September. He hasn't completed five innings in two of his last three starts. Morton had a seven-game stretch without yielding a home run end Sunday at Miami. This will be the fifth consecutive start on the road for Morton, who holds a 6-6 record and a 4.75 ERA in 15 career starts versus the Nationals. He has yet to face Washington this year, but he went 2-0 in matchups against it last year. The Nationals will go with left-hander Patrick Corbin (10-13, 5.00), who had a strong outing on Sunday at Milwaukee by holding the Brewers to one run in six innings. However, Corbin only has one home victory to show for the past two-plus months. Corbin was the losing pitcher on March 30 in his only outing this season against Atlanta. He's 6-11 with a 4.32 ERA in 22 all-time appearances (20 starts) against the Braves. Only his 5-12 record against the Los Angeles Dodgers reflects more losses against one team. The Nationals are hoping that 4 2/3 innings of relief work from Cory Abbott in the series opener pays off as others in the bullpen were rested for later in the series.

Colorado hadn't named a starter for that contest, but right-hander Peter Lambert (3-7, 5.36) is a strong possibility. Lambert and Winn were the starting pitchers when San Francisco completed a three-game sweep of Colorado with a 6-3 victory on Sunday. Winn struck out nine while tossing six innings of three-run ball to collect his first major league victory. It was the first time he has pitched against Colorado. Winn, who began his big-league career as a reliever, will be making his fourth start. Lambert allowed six runs on eight hits in five innings and took the loss. He surrendered a season-high three home runs. Lambert also had a relief outing against San Francisco on June 6, and he yielded three runs in 1 1/3 innings. Memphis coaches said they've seen changes to the offense under Newberry, which means there's yet another wrinkle to prepare when playing Navy. As a team, the Midshipmen ran the ball 44 times for 245 yards. Silverfield has repeatedly talked about Memphis' depth this season, and that'll be a major factor Thursday (especially on the defensive line). Defensive coordinator Matt Barnes is in his second season with the Tigers and saw the Navy offense last season in Annapolis, so there's some familiarity. That game ended in a 37-13 blowout win for Memphis.

Right-hander Jameson Taillon (7-9, 5.27 ERA) will get the start for Chicago (78-68), while the Rockies will send left-hander Ty Blach (2-1, 4.58) to the mound in the series finale. Taillon is coming off a strong start against Arizona on Friday, when he tossed six scoreless innings and gave up just one hit. He didn't factor into the 1-0 loss to the Diamondbacks, but it was an encouraging outing for Taillon, who hasn't earned a win since Aug. 8 and is 0-3 with a 5.57 ERA in six starts since then. The current rut comes on the heels of a stretch in which Taillon went 5-0 with a 2.17 ERA in six outings from July 7 to the Aug. 8 victory. Taillon's seven wins are half of his total with the New York Yankees last season, when he went 14-5 with a 3.91 ERA. Rather than the stats, he is just concerned with trying to help the Cubs reach the playoffs in his first season with the club. Colorado (52-92) is trying to avoid losing 100 games for the first time in franchise history. Blach has been a steadying presence in a rotation hit hard by injuries. Four starters -- German Marquez, Antonio Senzatela, Austin Gomber and Ryan Feltner -- are currently on the injured list. Blach started the season coming out of the bullpen but has been a starter since July 23. He has pitched well against tough teams, like when he held Baltimore to a run on three hits over seven innings on Aug. 27, and has gone at least five innings in each of his last three outings. In six career appearances (three starts) against the Cubs, Blach is 4-1 with a 4.43 ERA. He last faced Chicago on April 15, 2022, throwing 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn a win.

In his most recent step on the comeback trail, Means threw a bullpen session on Saturday. He went 1-1 with a 3.74 ERA in six minor league rehab starts over the past month. Means, a 30-year-old veteran who went 6-9 with a 3.62 ERA in his last full season in 2021, gives the Orioles (91-52) an experienced starter for the stretch run as they battle the Tampa Bay Rays for the American League East crown. That being said, Means' counterpart on Tuesday night is far more experienced, as 42-year-old Adam Wainwright (3-11, 8.19 ERA) will face Baltimore for just the second time in his 18-year career. He lost to the Orioles on June 17, 2017, when he was hammered for nine runs in 1 2/3 innings. Wainwright has not won since June 17 and remains stuck on 198 career wins. Since his last victory, Wainwright has gone 0-10 with a 10.72 ERA in 11 starts, and his season ERA has risen by 2.63 in that span. Last time out, Wainwright gave up six runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the Atlanta Braves on Thursday. It was the fourth time in six starts that he allowed at least six runs.

When the Jets square off against the Buffalo Bills on "Monday Night Football" at MetLife Stadium, it will mark the next step of two fascinating journeys. In front of a national TV audience and on the 22nd anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. Rodgers will make his highly anticipated regular-season debut for the Jets, who acquired the four-time NFL MVP from the Green Bay Packers in April. The game also will mark the Jets debut of running back Dalvin Cook, who was signed by New York during training camp to bolster its backfield behind Rodgers. Cook — whose brother James will be on the other sideline — spent his first six seasons with Minnesota and ran for at least 1,100 yards the last four years, but he was a salary cap cut this offseason. Cook had offseason shoulder surgery and started practicing with the Jets only right before the season. Anderson also received a no-decision in a start against the Giants in June, allowing three runs in 5 1/3 innings with a season-best seven strikeouts. He has gone 3-3 with a 4.77 ERA in 11 career starts against San Francisco. The Giants teed off on the Colorado bullpen in Friday's win, hammering four relievers who did not include Daniel Bard, who has been battling arm fatigue.

Miami will count on left-hander Braxton Garrett (8-5, 3.86 ERA) to set the tone in the series finale. Garrett helped the Marlins kick off the current winning streak by allowing one run over six innings in a victory over the Washington Nationals on Aug. 31. Garrett went 3-2 with a 3.18 ERA in six August starts. One of the losses came on the road against the Dodgers on Aug. 19 in the second game of a doubleheader, when he gave up three runs over six innings. It was his first start against Los Angeles in two career appearances. Two years ago, he yielded three runs to the Dodgers in a three-inning relief outing. Urias was scheduled to start the Thursday game, but the Dodgers instead will turn to right-hander Ryan Pepiot (0-1, 1.29). After dealing with an oblique injury in the first half, Pepiot is set to take over a significant role down the stretch and into the playoffs. Pepiot has made two career appearances against the Marlins, including a five-inning relief outing Aug. 19 in the first game of a doubleheader, when he gave up one run on three hits. He started against Miami on Aug. 21, 2002, and earned a win after tossing six innings of two-run ball.

He permitted five hits while celebrating his 24th birthday with a 6-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday. Giants left-hander Alex Wood (5-4, 4.35 ERA) will aim for his first win since July 26 when he takes the mound on Wednesday. His past nine appearances all came in relief, and he has started just 11 of his 24 games this year. Most recently, he gave up just an unearned run in three innings on Friday against the San Diego Padres. Wood, 32, is 4-2 with a 3.65 ERA in 11 career appearances (eight starts) against the Cubs.

Rookie Alec Marsh (0-7, 5.47 ERA) will make his eighth career start and first against Boston. His last four outings have been in relief, including a loss to the Red Sox on Aug. 10 despite allowing just two runs on six hits in five innings. Prior to Boston losing again on Friday, manager Alex Cora was unwilling to give up on his team's slim playoff hopes. Scheduled Saturday starter Tanner Houck (3-8, 4.93 ERA) has pitched at least five innings in 11 of his 14 starts this season, though the right-hander lasted just four frames in a 7-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers last Sunday. The Red Sox surely could use any type of length after James Paxton was relieved after just 1 1/3 innings Friday in one of the shortest outings of his career.

The 26-year-old rookie will look to continue a two-month stretch of dominance on Saturday when Chicago faces the host Cincinnati Reds in the third contest of a four-game series. Since June 27, Assad (3-2, 2.96 ERA) has been lights out, going 3-0 with a 1.58 ERA over his past 14 appearances, including five starts. He most recently allowed one run on three hits while walking two and striking out seven across seven innings to earn a win against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday. Assad is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in four career appearances (two starts) against Cincinnati. His two outings vs. the Reds this year both came in relief, and he had logged no decisions while allowing two runs in a total of 7 1/3 innings. Left-hander Andrew Abbott (8-4, 3.35 ERA) will try to slow down Chicago on Saturday when he makes his 17th start of the season. In his most recent outing, Abbott matched his season low by lasting just 3 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on five hits against the Giants on Monday. He walked three and struck out six. Abbott, a rookie, has failed to work at least six innings in each of his past six starts. He is 2-2 with a 6.67 ERA during that span

Florida brings a new-to-them, experienced quarterback to Salt Lake City on Thursday night where seething No. 14 Utah stands ready to exact a measure of revenge for the Gators' 32-29 upset of the Utes in the 2022 opener. Only eight starters are back from the 2022 Florida team that beat ranked Utah last September, but an influx of transfers means UF is hardly inexperienced. The Gators introduce Graham Mertz, a transfer from Wisconsin, as the QB1 on Thursday night alongside a powerful companion that might be the more important crutch at Rice-Eccles Stadium. That would be the Gators' running game, which overpowered Utah in last year's tussle. Florida gained a program-record 531 rushing yards and then-quarterback Anthony Richardson scored three TDs. Richardson was the No. 4 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, which is where Mertz fits into the plot line. But the Gators welcome back the running back tandem of Montrell Johnson Jr. and Trevor Etienne, who combined for 16 TDs last season, to offer proven production and continuity.

Although Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has not named a starter for Wednesday, right-hander Ryan Pepiot (0-0, 2.00 ERA) is expected to be part of the pitching plan once he is added to the roster. Pepiot allowed one run on three hits in four innings on Thursday in a no-decision against the Cleveland Guardians. The Diamondbacks started the series with their two best starters, Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, but the duo combined to give up 13 runs in 10 2/3 innings in consecutive defeats. Arizona was feeling good of late as a winner in 10 of 12 games before arriving in Los Angeles. And while the Diamondbacks have found it hard to measure up against a first-place club, they are still in the wild-card hunt, a mere half game out of the third spot. The Diamondbacks are set to send right-hander Brandon Pfaadt (1-6, 5.91) to the mound Wednesday. The rookie has made 13 starts this season with one coming against the Dodgers on Aug. 8, when he took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings. Pfaadt has been solid over his past three outings, posting a 2.50 ERA while earning his first career win on Friday against the Cincinnati Reds.

He has been especially sharp in August, entering Tuesday at 2-1 with a 2.59 ERA in four starts covering 24 1/3 innings. Chicago will turn to Jessie Scholtens, who is seeking his first win since joining the rotation on Aug. 1, to try to even the series. Scholtens (1-6, 4.15 ERA) is 0-3 with a 5.33 ERA in five starts this month. The Texans will continue their strong evaluation of CJ Stroud. Ultimately, they will see how he plays, and the plan is to play a couple of series to determine how he handles NFL action early. But the Texans need to establish a running game. Unfortunately, all the running backs struggled. The offensive line must do a better job of opening holes and giving the running backs opportunities to run through them. Therefore, they have two weeks to prepare for the Baltimore Ravens, and running the ball and keeping the chains moving will be the best way to keep Lamar Jackson off the field.

In the series finale, Chicago right-hander Javier Assad (2-2, 3.13 ERA) is scheduled to start opposite Pittsburgh left-hander Bailey Falter (1-7, 4.53). Assad was scheduled to start Saturday, but that got pushed back after the Cubs moved struggling starter Drew Smyly to the bullpen -- he pitched in Friday's game -- and put reliever Michael Fulmer (right forearm strain) on the 15-day injured list. They then recalled Wicks. Over his past four starts, Assad is 1-0 with a 2.86 ERA. His only career appearance against the Pirates came last season. He did not get a decision in a start on Sept. 23, 2022, pitching four innings and allowing four runs (three earned) and four hits. Falter got his first win with Pittsburgh his last time out, which was his fourth appearance since being acquired from Philadelphia. After making three starts for the Pirates, he pitched six innings last Monday against St. Louis in a scheduled long relief appearance, allowing one run and three hits and matching his career best with eight strikeouts.

In his past three outings, Framber Valdez hasn't come close to recreating the magic of the no-hitter he threw on Aug. 1. Following that gem against the Cleveland Guardians, Valdez has allowed 16 runs, 15 earned, and five home runs while going 0-2 with a 6.86 ERA in three starts. Valdez (9-9, 3.55 ERA) has allowed at least four runs in six of his past seven starts, the lone exception being the no-hitter. During his latest outing, on Saturday against the Seattle Mariners, he surrendered six runs and 10 hits in five innings. Matt Manning (5-4, 4.31 ERA) has overcome a rough patch and produced two straight solid outings. He limited Boston to one unearned run over 5 1/3 innings on Aug. 12, then held Cleveland to two runs (one earned) in six innings on Saturday. Manning, who was the winning pitcher in both games, had yielded 19 runs, 17 earned, in his previous three outings. Right-hander Eury Perez (5-4, 3.19 ERA) and left-hander Braxton Garrett (7-3, 3.91) will look to help Miami secure a more favorable position in the postseason chase. Perez will get the nod for Game 1 on Saturday, while Braxton is scheduled to start the nightcap. In his most recent outing, Perez escaped with a no-decision after giving up four runs on four hits in four innings against the New York Yankees on Sunday. The rookie has never faced Los Angeles. Garrett worked five scoreless innings against the Houston Astros on Monday, surrendering just four hits to earn the win. He has faced the Dodgers once in his career, allowing three runs on three hits in three innings of relief on May 15, 2021. Left-hander Caleb Ferguson (7-3, 2.38 ERA) is set to go up against Perez to begin the twin bill. Ferguson, who will be serving as an opener, has made 51 appearances this season, but only one was a start. In seven career appearances (zero starts) against the Marlins, Ferguson has never earned a decision while recording a 4.76 ERA. Fellow southpaw Julio Urias (10-6, 4.35 ERA) is expected to take the mound for Game 2 after permitting three runs on four hits in seven innings against the Rockies on Sunday. Urias matched his career high with 12 strikeouts against Colorado and has picked up three consecutive wins. He has also logged three quality starts over his past four outings, giving up six runs in 24 innings during that span, good for a 2.25 ERA.

Last Saturday wasn’t exactly a pretty welcome for the Panthers 2022 third-round pick Matt Corral, who missed the entirety of his rookie campaign with a Lisfranc fracture. Corral struggled early and often, failing to pick up a first down on his first three possessions. He was also responsible for two turnovers—a fumble and a late pick—in an offense that simply could not move the football. The rough outing wasn’t too much of a surprise given his absence (and that offensive line). But Corral will need to show the Panthers something to warrant a roster spot.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson has put in two strong performances so far. While no amount of preseason heroics will displace Deshaun Watson, the rookie's trajectory is worth watching on two levels. First, backup quarterbacks do matter; it's easy to write them off, but you don't want to be without a reliable No. 2 option when the starter goes down. If Thompson-Robinson can continue to prove himself, he might enter the season as the Browns' secondary signal-caller. Beyond that, preseason can be an opportunity for a player to put himself in the shop window. Even if he doesn't show enough to secure the Browns' backup job, DTR could show enough to earn a job with another organization. You never know who's watching a performance, and when that scout or executive will come calling.

It might help that the Rockies are sending a revitalized Austin Gomber (9-9, 5.33 ERA) to the mound in the finale while the Diamondbacks will counter with rookie Slade Cecconi (0-0, 2.84). Gomber has been Colorado's best pitcher since June 25, going 5-2 with a 2.72 ERA in nine starts. He took a road loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday despite allowing just two runs in five innings. He has been especially effective at home, where he has posted a 3.60 ERA in his past five starts -- tossing at least five innings in each of those outings. Part of Gomber's turnaround -- he was 0-4 with a 12.12 ERA in mid-April -- was acknowledging the weight of being a key piece in the Nolan Arenado trade in 2021 was impacting his performance. That proved cathartic for him.
