It took overtime for the Ducks to win at Columbus and Boston, before Saturday's visit to Philadelphia. They made it 3-0-0 on the trip with a dominating performance in a 7-4 win over the Flyers. I don't expect the Ducks to explode for 7 goals in this one.

With Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts expected to play through a left knee injury, his teammates on the defensive side of the ball should be expected to ratchet up the pressure on Howell when the NFC East rivals meet Sunday at Washington. Philadelphia (6-1) has the second-most sacks in the NFL, and Howell is the most-sacked QB in the league. That combination could make it a long afternoon for the Commanders (3-4). In this situation last year at FedEx Field, the Eagles sacked Carson Wentz nine times, forced two fumbles, and recovered one of them. Washington's offensive line is arguably worse, Howell is not as experienced at picking up blitzes, and Philadelphia comes in with the league's top defense against the run. I don't think the knee will hinder Hurts. The game flies over.

The Washington Wizards might have caught a break in their home opener when they take on the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday. Memphis, which is coming off the second game of a back-to-back, trailed most of the game during its 108-104 home loss to the Denver Nuggets on Friday. Six Grizzlies scored in double figures in the loss. Jaren Jackson Jr. led Memphis with 21 points and Derrick Rose scored 16 points off the bench, including a go-ahead jumper late in the fourth quarter. Memphis' advantage was short-lived, however, as the Grizzlies couldn't hold off the defending NBA champions and fell to 0-2. The Grizzlies are playing without All-Star guard Ja Morant, who is serving a 25-game suspension after he was caught on video multiple times with guns. Marcus Smart, starting at point guard in Morant's absence, scored 20 points on Friday. Desmond Bane, who opened the season with 31 points and hit 5-of-10 from beyond the arc, scored 15 points Friday and went just 1-of-10 from 3-point range.

No. 4 Florida State aims to keep its unbeaten streak rolling on Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C., when it opposes Wake Forest. The Seminoles (7-0, 5-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) are coming off a 38-20 home win over then-No. 16 Duke. It wasn't easy though, as Florida State trailed by double digits early in the second quarter. The Seminoles outscored the Blue Devils 21-0 in the fourth to close out the win. While Florida State is aiming for a spot in the College Football Playoff, Wake Forest (4-3, 1-3) is simply trying to go bowling for the eighth consecutive season in Dave Clawson's 10 years at the helm. The Demon Deacons are coming off their first conference victory of the season, a 21-17 nail-biter against visiting Pitt. Wake Forest scored the go-ahead touchdown -- a 15-yard pass from Santino Marucci to Cameron Hite -- with seven seconds left. The win against the Panthers was Marucci's first career start at quarterback. A year ago, he played quarterback, running back and safety. He completed 12 of 21 passes vs. Pitt for 151 yards and threw two picks, but when the game hung in the balance, he made the plays necessary for the Demon Deacons. (FLM)

Pettersson has two goals and eight assists in six games. Brock Boeser is the team's top goal-scorer with six, while J.T. Miller (two goals, six assists) is also off to a strong start. Last season, the Canucks ranked dead last in the NHL in penalty killing at just 71.6 percent. This season they showed immediate improvement with two victories over the explosive Edmonton Oilers. Overall, the Canucks have killed 78.3 percent of their penalties this season, which ranks in the middle of the pack. While the climactic event from Game 5 of the American League Championship Series served the Houston Astros well, it did not enable them to complete their foremost task. Houston secured a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series after Jose Altuve clubbed a dramatic three-run, ninth-inning homer that yielded a 5-4 victory over the Rangers on Friday and a sweep of all three games at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. By virtue of the seismic blast, the Astros moved one step closer to securing their third consecutive AL pennant, needing a victory in Game 6 on Sunday in Houston to avoid a winner-take-all affair in Game 7 the following evening. The issue for Houston is its relative ineptitude at Minute Maid Park, where the Astros finished with a sub-.500 record (39-42, compared to 51-30 on the road) during the regular season prior to losing three of four home games this postseason. Two years ago, it took Dan Campbell a dozen games to earn his first victory as coach of the Detroit Lions. That win would have come much earlier if not for Baltimore's Justin Tucker, whose 66-yard field goal handed Campbell and his team a crushing home defeat in September of that season. Campbell and the Lions stayed the course through that difficult 2021 season. After the loss to the Ravens, quarterback Jared Goff said defiantly that “the gut punches will stop” - and now, as Detroit prepares to face Baltimore again Sunday, Motown's team is in a much different place. This is a matchup of division leaders. In fact, the Lions are one of five teams in a tie for the NFL's best record. This will be the first home game in four weeks for the Ravens (4-2), although in one sense that might be a relief for the Lions, given what Tucker has done at Detroit's Ford Field. He kicked a 61-yard field goal there to beat the Lions in 2013, then outdid himself with a record-long boot from 66 two seasons ago. That was the third game of Campbell's first season. The Lions didn't win one until December.

Now Trevor Lawrence aims to play through a sprained left knee as the Jaguars (4-2) visit the New Orleans Saints (3-3) on Thursday night. Lawrence's injury occurred in the final minutes of a 37-20 victory over Indianapolis on Sunday, leaving him little more than three full days to recover before Jacksonville's offense goes up against one of the top-performing defenses in the NFL. The Saints rank fifth in the NFL in total defense and fifth against the pass. Their eight interceptions puts them in a six-way tie for second most in the NFL (a group that also includes the Jaguars). Lawrence has completed 67% of his passes for 1,439 yards, with seven touchdowns and three interceptions this season. But he also has been sacked 16 times. If he doesn't play in New Orleans, backup C.J. Beathard could make his first start in more than two seasons. Since stumbling to a 1-2 start, the Jaguars have played considerably better in consecutive victories over Atlanta and Buffalo in England, and over Indianapolis at home in Week 6.

Rookie Brandon Pfaadt has a daunting task on his hands Thursday when the Arizona Diamondbacks bid to subdue the homer-happy Philadelphia Phillies in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series in Phoenix. The Phillies have gone deep 15 times in the past four playoff games, the most homers hit by a team in a four-game span in major league postseason history. Philadelphia has homered three times in each of the first two contests of the NLCS to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. Kyle Schwarber went deep in the Phillies' 5-3 victory in Game 1 Monday and homered twice the following night in a 10-0 rout in Game 2. Schwarber's multi-homer performance was the fourth by a Philadelphia player this postseason, with Nick Castellanos accomplishing the feat twice and Bryce Harper doing so in Game 3 of the NL Division Series. The Houston Astros may not have their backs against the wall, but they know they are one backward step away from feeling its full force. The Astros certainly are in must-win mode as they tackle the red-hot Texas Rangers in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series on Wednesday night in Arlington, Texas. The Rangers went on the road to win the first two games of the best-of-seven series by scores of 2-0 and 5-4 to run their postseason winning streak to seven games. Houston needs a quick turnaround to get back in the series against their American League West and in-state rival.

The Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Chargers have different reasons to be happy they get extra time to prepare for each other. Monday night's game gives the Cowboys (3-2) an extra day to deal with the shock of their 42-10 blowout loss to the San Francisco 49ers last Sunday. The Chargers (2-2) are coming off their bye week and will have some key starters back. Quarterback Justin Herbert is dealing with a fractured middle finger on his left non-throwing hand that is not expected to keep him from playing. While Dallas' 28-16 loss at Arizona on Sept. 24 was surprising, the defeat at San Francisco hit the Cowboys differently.

Now that their 14-game slide is over, it sure seems like a good time for the Chicago Bears to start a different kind of streak. After all, they won't have to worry about containing one of the NFL's most electrifying players when they host Minnesota on Sunday. That's because Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson is out with a hamstring injury. The Bears (1-4) won 40-20 at Washington behind another solid performance by the offense to stop a skid that dated to a Week 7 victory at New England last year. They haven't won two in a row since Weeks 16 and 17 of the 2021 season, when they beat Seattle and the New York Giants. They went 3-14 last year, the worst record in the NFL. The Bears' chance of putting together back-to-back wins seems significantly better with Jefferson on injured reserve. The 2022 NFL Offensive Player of the Year slipped on the U.S. Bank Stadium turf last week while trying to make a cut on his route during a third-down pass deep in Kansas City territory. He grabbed the back of his right leg and limped slowly to the sideline in the fourth quarter of a 27-20 loss. Jefferson hasn't missed a game since the Vikings (1-4) drafted him with the No. 22 overall pick in 2020. He has 36 catches for 571 yards and three touchdowns this season, and his absence for at least the next four games figures to have a profound impact. The Vikings always knew which receiver they were featuring, no matter the opponent.

Ja'Marr Chase says he's been getting open all season. Even during the first three games, as injured quarterback Joe Burrow struggled to get the Bengals' pass game on track, Chase claimed to be like the 7-Eleven convenience store - always open. The Burrow-to-Chase connection - it's been a thing since they played together at LSU and won a national championship in the 2019 season - produced three touchdowns and reignited the Bengals last week in a 34-20 confidence-building win over the Arizona Cardinals. Burrow looked far more comfortable scrambling and throwing. His lack of mobility had been a struggle all season with the lingering effects of a strained calf muscle. He said Wednesday that it's “pretty close” to being 100% healed. Now the Bengals have a chance to win two in a row, go into the bye week at .500 and try to keep building momentum on the other side. Cincinnati hosts the well-rested Seattle Seahawks (3-1) on Sunday. After a loss in the season opener at home against the Los Angeles Rams, the Seahawks have won three straight before their bye week behind some first- and second-year players making major contributions as well as 33-year-old quarterback Geno Smith

Iowa State (3-3, 2-1) enters with a little momentum following a 27-14 home victory over TCU last Saturday. The Cyclones will attempt to win consecutive games for the first time this season. Iowa State has struggled on offense, averaging just 323 yards and 21.8 points per game. Rocco Becht has thrown for 1,223 yards and 10 touchdowns, with five interceptions. He completed 16 of 28 passes for 138 yards and a score in the win against TCU. The Cyclones rank fifth in the Big 12 in scoring defense and are coming off a four-interception performance against the Horned Frogs.

Pittsburgh played Tuesday, but the Penguins didn't exactly turn the page as they hoped. Despite a roughly 50 percent turnover in the roster during the offseason, they were plagued by lingering frustrations from last season. They had some defensive lapses, didn't rev the engines later in the game and blew a two-goal lead in a 4-2 setback to the Chicago Blackhawks. Most of Pittsburgh's newcomers could be described as players in support roles. The main guys, then, saw all-too-familiar problems in the opening loss. Last season, the Penguins lost nine games in which they led after two periods. They'll be plenty of scoring in this one.

The New Jersey Devils know what it's like to finally see a lengthy rebuild produce results. Now the Arizona Coyotes would like to begin experiencing the same thing. The Coyotes will open their season Friday night when they oppose Devils in Newark, N.J., the beginning of a four-game Arizona road trip. The Devils, fresh off their deepest trip into the Stanley Cup playoffs in more than a decade, will be completing a back-to-back set at home after edging the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 in their season opener on Thursday. The Devils snapped a four-season playoff drought last year. They collected a franchise-record 112 points in the regular season before outlasting the New York Rangers in a seven-game first-round series -- New Jersey's first postseason series victory since reaching the Stanley Cup Final in the spring of 2012. New Jersey fell to the Carolina Hurricanes in five games in the Eastern Conference semifinals, but the taste of playoff success was enough for management to double down on its young core and coaching staff. General manager Tom Fitzgerald signed Timo Meier, who turned 27 this week, and 25-year-old Jesper Bratt to eight-year contracts while also re-signing 32-year-old left winger Erik Haula, who was one of just four Devils skaters aged 30 or older last season. In addition, head coach Lindy Ruff received a multiyear extension on Wednesday. Jack Hughes, who collected a franchise-record 99 points while playing as a 21-year-old last season, scored twice in a span of 5:04 late in the second period Thursday to help the Devils overcome an early deficit.

Tampa Bay will begin its quest for a fourth Stanley Cup on Tuesday by hosting the Nashville Predators, but the Lightning will do it under decidedly unfamiliar circumstances. Coach Jon Cooper's group will be without star goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy for at least the first two months after the 2019 Vezina Trophy winner underwent back surgery in late September. That predicament -- playing perhaps one-third of the season's games without one of the NHL's premier backstops -- adds pressure to not let the campaign slip away before 2024 arrives. Cooper will turn to Swedish goaltender Jonas Johansson, 28, whose track record over 35 career NHL matches suggests the Lightning's offense will need to be in top form. Over his four-year career, Johansson is 11-13-4 with a 3.35 goals-against average and an .886 save percentage, though he did play his best hockey in two recent stints with the Colorado Avalanche. In his first two starts this preseason, he denied a combined 67 shots in shutouts over the Carolina Hurricanes (42 saves) and Florida Panthers (25). Don't overreact, that's exactly what this number is counting on.

That powerful offense that tied the major league record with 307 homers was shut out for the first time since May 12. Wheeler, 33, is 12-7 with a 3.18 ERA in 27 career regular-season outings against the Braves. That includes a 2-0 mark with a 3.32 ERA in three matchups against Atlanta in 2023. Ronald Acuna Jr. has smacked four homers off Wheeler. Ozzie Albies and Olson each have hit two. Fried had a forgettable Game 1 outing in last season's series with the Phillies as he was torched for six runs (four earned) and eight hits over 3 1/3 innings. Fried, 29, made just 14 starts this season, missing time with hamstring and forearm injuries. Valdez earned the victory in Game 6 of the 2022 World Series after limiting the Philadelphia Phillies to one run on two hits and two walks with nine strikeouts over six innings and has won three consecutive postseason starts. Valdez is 3-1 with a 2.37 ERA over seven career appearances (four starts) against the Twins. In his lone postseason appearance against Minnesota, Valdez twirled five scoreless innings of relief in Game 1 of the 2020 AL wild-card series while earning a 4-1 road victory. Right-hander Pablo Lopez (11-8, 3.66) will start Game 2 as the Twins attempt to square the best-of-five series at a game apiece. In his second career postseason start on Tuesday -- and first since Game 2 of the 2020 National League Division Series for the Miami Marlins against the Atlanta Braves -- Lopez earned a 3-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 1 of that AL wild-card series. He surrendered one run on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. Lopez faced Houston once previously while he was with the Marlins. Montgomery, acquired at the trade deadline from the last-place St. Louis Cardinals, went 2-0 with a 0.67 ERA over his final four starts, allowing one run or less in each for a team fighting for a playoff spot. The seven-year veteran opened the playoffs for the Rangers on Tuesday and threw seven shutout innings against Tampa Bay. He gave up six hits, struck out five and didn't walk a batter. Montgomery is 3-1 with a 3.04 ERA in 16 career starts against the Orioles. The Rangers opted to leave veteran right-hander Max Scherzer off the ALDS roster. Scherzer (strained teres major muscle in his right shoulder) threw a two-inning simulated game on Friday. Bochy said he could be added to the roster if there is an injury. Rodriguez's season was a tale of two parts. After going 2-2 with a 7.35 ERA over his first 10 starts, he was sent down to Triple-A Norfolk, where he worked on his fastball command. Ron Rivera understands what the Chicago Bears are going through. In his first three seasons as coach in Washington, the former Bears linebacker and assistant dealt with one off-the-field distraction after another, from the NFL and Congress investigating owner Dan Snyder's dealings to the Drug Enforcement Administration raiding the facility and home of trainer Ryan Vermillion. Earlier this season, Rivera relished a line of questions about the long snapper situation because if that was the Commanders' biggest problem, it's good to just be worried about football. Not so much with the Bears, who are mired in chaos off the field and winless on it. They visit Washington on Thursday night with a player in exile for undisclosed reasons, their defensive coordinator gone for what he said was health and family reasons, and little reason to believe they're primed for their first victory in nearly a year.

After being shut out in the series opener on Tuesday, the fourth-seeded Rays will host the fifth-seeded Texas Rangers on Wednesday afternoon for Game 2 of their best-of-three series in St. Petersburg, Fla. Tampa Bay produced just six hits and committed a franchise playoff-record four errors in a 4-0 setback to Texas in the series opener on Tuesday.

Lopez recorded a team-high 234 strikeouts in 194 innings, and he limited batters to a .238 average. This will be Lopez's second career playoff start. In two career starts against Toronto, Lopez is 1-0 with a 5.59 ERA. The Blue Jays will turn to right-hander Kevin Gausman to start the series. He went 12-9 with a 3.16 ERA in 31 starts this season, and he led the American League with 237 strikeouts in 185 innings. Gausman has appeared in seven playoff games and started two. He is 0-1 with a 4.57 ERA in those contests, which have included appearances with Baltimore, Atlanta, San Francisco and Toronto. In 11 career starts against the Twins, Gausman is 1-4 with a 6.35 ERA. The Twins and Blue Jays faced each other six times this season, with each club winning three games. Minnesota had a narrow 28-26 advantage in runs.

Jordan Montgomery was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals at the trade deadline and has gone 4-2 with a 2.79 ERA in 11 starts for the Rangers. The 30-year-old has a 1.35 ERA in two career postseason appearances (one start). Montgomery is 4-4 with a 5.12 ERA in 13 career starts against Tampa Bay. Randy Arozarena (4-for-20) has two homers off Montgomery, while Manuel Margot (6-for-18) and Isaac Paredes (1-for-3) each have one. The Vikings have fumbled a league-high seven times and lost them all, and that doesn’t include two more that were negated by a defensive penalty and a borderline forward progress call. O’Connell, who led the Vikings to 13 wins in his debut season, has been as stern with his players as ever in the attempt to stop the ball-security problems, running them through a number of drills to practice hanging on. Turnovers lead to ponts.

Triston McKenzie will try to complete a very difficult season on a high note when the Cleveland Guardians right-hander starts against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday. McKenzie was expected to be a mainstay on the Guardians' staff this season. Instead, he has pitched in the majors only three times. He sustained an upper teres major muscle strain in spring training and didn't return until early June. After making two starts, McKenzie was sidelined again, this time by a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right arm. McKenzie (0-2, 6.17 ERA) finally came back on Sunday, but the outing didn't go well. He lasted just 1 2/3 innings, allowing three runs while walking six batters in a 5-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.
