That move came after Armstrong fired coach Craig Berube on Tuesday following his team's 6-4 home loss to the short-handed Detroit Red Wings. After recording impressive victories over No. 7 Marquette and Michigan State, the Badgers (7-3) saw their six-game winning streak come to a halt with a 97-73 setback to No. 1 Arizona on Saturday. Wisconsin stayed close early before the Wildcats closed the first half with a 25-8 run for a 48-31 lead at the break. The Badgers seemed to regain their defensive identity during their winning streak, allowing just 56.7 points per game. They outrebounded opponents by 11.2 per game, including Marquette by 38-23 and Michigan State 36-22. Wisconsin, however, was outrebounded by the Wildcats 39-30 and outscored 42-32 in the paint. After limiting each of the six previous opponents to 46.2 percent shooting or less, Arizona connected on 58.3 percent of its shots — including 12 of 26 from 3-point range.

The Los Angeles Lakers will look to get back on the winning track when they travel to play the hapless San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday in the first of two games between the teams in three nights in the Alamo City. The Lakers travel south for the second game of a road back-to-back after taking a 127-125 loss at Dallas on Tuesday that snapped their season-best, four-game winning streak. Included in that winning stretch was the championship game of the NBA's inaugural in-season tournament, not a regular-season contest, but that success didn't carry over to Tuesday. Anthony Davis led Los Angeles with 37 points and 11 rebounds against the Mavericks, while LeBron James finished with 33 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. Austin Reaves added 22 points off the bench, and Taurean Prince tallied 15. The Lakers outshot Dallas 53.8 percent to 49.4 percent, outrebounded the hosts 40-36 and made 15 of their 29 3-point attempts. However, they made just 12 of 18 free-throw attempts. Bo Horvat and Mathew Barzal didn't wait long Monday night to turn what could have been the New York Islanders' most demoralizing blown third-period lead of the season into their second straight potentially seismic win. The Islanders will attempt to continue surging Wednesday night when they host the Anaheim Ducks in the penultimate game of a season-long six-game homestand. New York earned another dramatic overtime victory Monday when Horvat scored 46 seconds into overtime to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs, 4-3. The Islanders, who have been outscored 41-25 after the second period this season, squandered a third-period lead for the ninth time -- and in uniquely awkward fashion -- when Morgan Rielly scored with 6.4 seconds left in regulation. Former New York captain John Tavares, who has been booed every time he's hit the ice at the Islanders' home arenas since he signed a seven-year deal with his hometown Maple Leafs in July 2018, collected his 1,000th career point by notching the primary assist on Rielly's goal. Teammates mobbed Tavares and boos rained down as a message congratulating Tavares on his achievement aired on the scoreboard. But on the home bench, Horvat and Barzal saw an immediate chance to rewrite the narrative. After Ilya Sorokin turned back a pair of shots by Auston Matthews, Barzal and Horvat started a 2-on-1 that ended with Horvat firing a shot into the upper-left corner of the net.

Mississippi State will try to keep that level of play going on Wednesday night in Starkville when it hosts Murray State in another non-conference contest. The Bulldogs (7-2) hit 58.6 percent of their field-goal tries Saturday and led by as many as 41 points in the second half against a good opponent. Freshman Josh Hubbard came off the bench to score a game-high 22 points, increasing his scoring average to a team-high 16.7 points per game. Meanwhile, the Racers (3-5) haven't gotten off to the start they wanted. The Golden State Warriors are once again experiencing difficulties winning on the road. The Warriors are saddled with a five-game road losing streak and will look to halt it on Tuesday night when they visit the Phoenix Suns. The recent struggles are reminiscent of last season, when Golden State was 11-30 on the road. Only three teams had worse road records. Golden State will look to end this season's slide when it takes on Phoenix, which hopes to have Bradley Beal, Kevin Durant and Devin Booker on the floor together for the first time. Beal is slated to play Tuesday for just the fourth time this season and first since Nov. 12. He has been plagued by back problems and has sat out the past 12 games. Durant (ankle) is listed as questionable and missed the Suns' 114-106 home loss to the Sacramento Kings on Friday. He was limited in Monday's non-contact practice. Beal was acquired from the Washington Wizards in the offseason to form a trio with Booker and Durant. The Los Angeles Lakers will look to build on their NBA in-season tournament title when they visit the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night. The Lakers captured the inaugural event in impressive fashion, winning seven straight games by a total of 135 points, capped by a 123-109 triumph over the Indiana Pacers on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Unfortunately for Los Angeles, its regular-season form hasn't been nearly as good. The Lakers have won just five of their past 12 non-tournament games, having alternated losses and wins over their past 10. Flipping the switch from the bright lights of Las Vegas to just another December trip to Dallas might not be easy for the Lakers. On Sunday, LeBron James was in attendance in Los Angeles when his oldest son, Bronny, made his collegiate debut for Southern California. On Monday, the Lakers announced plans to raise the in-season tournament banner into the rafters when they return home from a three-game trip to face the New York Knicks on Dec. 18. The Volunteers (6-3) answered a three-game skid against three ranked foes with a convincing victory over George Mason on Tuesday and delivered a spirited comeback versus then-No. 20 Illinois on Saturday. The 86-79 triumph over the Fighting Illini not only gave Tennessee back-to-back victories but also extended its nonconference home winning streak to 25 games. Dalton Knecht scored 13 of his 21 points in the second half against Illinois. Knecht, who averages a team-best 19.2 points per game, has led the Volunteers in scoring in seven of his nine games this season. Tennessee received double-digit scoring performances from all of its starters for the first time this season. Jonas Aidoo recorded 14 points and seven rebounds, Santiago Vescovi added 12 and nine, respectively, Josiah-Jordan James scored 12 points and Zakai Zeigler added 11. While Volunteers coach Rick Barnes was content with what he saw on offense, he was quick to credit his charges for their play at the other end of the floor. Tennessee enjoyed a 43-34 edge on the boards against Illinois, who entered the game ranked among the national leaders in rebounds.

The Carolina Hurricanes will try to snap a three-game losing streak when they continue their six-game road trip at Vancouver on Saturday night. The road trip began with a 2-1 loss at Winnipeg on Monday despite outshooting the Jets 43-22, as Laurent Brossoit made a season-high 42 saves. But Carolina, which has the second-worst road record in the Metro Division (6-9-0) behind only the last-place Columbus Blue Jackets (2-8-3), followed that with a 6-1 clunker at Edmonton on Wednesday. The Hurricanes then lost 3-2 at Calgary on Thursday after blowing an early 2-0 lead. Frustrated Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour, who during an in-game interview at Edmonton said he had "never seen a team play this brutal," didn't hold back after seeing his team allow three goals in the span of a little over six minutes midway through the third period at Calgary. Blake Coleman scored the game-winner with a short-handed goal.

Blake Hinson will have a hard act to follow when Pitt hosts Canisius on Saturday evening. Pitt (6-3) had 38 attempts from 3-point range, making 16, while providing an offensive barrage that left the Mountaineers behind in the second half. Pitt averages 30.0 attempts from distance per game, which is easily the most in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Hinson is making 4.3 3-pointers per outing, which ranks second in Division I behind only Hofstra's Tyler Thomas (4.5). He attempts 9.6 from the 3-point line each time out -- which ranks fourth in the country -- and has led the Panthers in scoring in five of its nine contests this season. The Golden Griffins (6-4) will likely have their hands full with the scoring threat.

Paolo Banchero offered another reminder why he's one of the league's emerging stars on Wednesday, when he scored a career-high 42 points in a 121-111 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Banchero can build on that stellar performance when Orlando takes on the visiting Detroit Pistons on Friday. Detroit dropped its 18th straight game and fell to 2-19 overall in a 116-102 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday. The Pistons will need to find a way to slow down the 21-year-old Banchero, who shot 16-of-26 from the field in the loss to Cleveland and became the second-youngest player in franchise history to score 40 points. This time, Bridges is coming off his fastest start to a game in his career, and the Nets hope to pair another productive night from him with another win Wednesday night when they visit the Hawks. This game was scheduled last week when both teams were eliminated from the in-season tournament. Bridges and the Nets are visiting Atlanta for the second time in two weeks. On Nov. 22, Bridges scored 30 of his points after halftime when the Nets trailed by 12 after one quarter and by 10 at halftime before taking a 147-145 overtime loss. Since Bridges made 16 of 31 shots at Atlanta, the Nets are 4-1 in their past five games. Brooklyn's only loss in that span was a 129-128 setback to the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday when they allowed 21 3-pointers. Bridges did not score more than 24 points in the first four games after the Atlanta visit before erupting for 42 in Saturday's 129-101 rout of the Orlando Magic. Bridges shot 12-of-20 and made 15 free throws. He put up 26 points in the opening quarter, the third-most productive opening period in team history.

The visitors held a two-goal lead over the Canadiens following three straight first-period tallies by Joe Veleno, Christian Fischer and Daniel Sprong. Alex DeBrincat added a fourth in the second frame for a 4-2 advantage. However, the Habs' Nick Suzuki and Gustav Lindstrom scored goals to send the game to overtime before Detroit defenseman Jake Walman won it less than a minute into three-on-three play. Heading into Sunday’s meeting with the surging Denver Broncos, Houston coach DeMeco Ryans was asked what he thinks has allowed them to bounce back after starting 1-5. “The biggest thing that I’ve seen from the Broncos and how they’ve turned things around is how their defense is attacking the football,” Ryans said. “When you take the ball away as many times as they have … you set the offense up, you set the team up for success. And that’s where it starts with these guys.” Denver (6-5) enters the game with a five-game winning streak, its longest since the 2015 season. The Broncos didn’t force a turnover in the first win in this stretch, but have piled up 15 combined in their past four games. This week they’ll face rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, who has done a great job of protecting the ball. He ranks second in the NFL with 3,266 yards passing and has thrown 19 touchdown passes with just five interceptions.

The skid is the longest in Pistons history within a single season. We're still staying together. The energy's still good. So we just have to figure it out out there." Cade Cunningham put up a team-high 15 points for the Pistons, his sixth consecutive game scoring in double figures, though produced his lowest total of that stretch. Isaiah Livers chipped in 14 points off the bench, and rookie Ausar Thompson recorded 12 points. Cunningham is averaging 22.8 points per game over the past six and a team-leading 21.8 for the season. Assistant coach Bob Woods also was fired. Later Monday, the Wild announced that John Hynes would be taking over for Evason. Hynes was fired by Nashville in May after parts of four seasons with the team, leading the Predators to the playoffs in three of those seasons. Hynes also spent time as coach of the New Jersey Devils (2015-19) and has compiled a career record of 284-255-63 across eight NHL seasons. Since opening the season at 3-4-1, St. Louis has won eight of 12. On Sunday, Pavel Buchnevich had a goal with two assists, Jake Neighbours scored twice and Robert Thomas added two more assists as the Blues won their season-high third straight road contest, 4-2 at Chicago.

A barrage of 3-pointers heading through the hoop led to an impressive comeback performance by the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday. A similar showing may earn the Nets the chance to play for a trip to Las Vegas along with the financial benefit linked to winning the NBA in-season tournament. Coming off the NBA's most proficient performance from behind the arc through the first month of the season, the Nets conclude the group stage of the in-season tournament Tuesday night when they host the eliminated Toronto Raptors.

The Carolina Hurricanes hope to build off a comeback win when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday. The Hurricanes scored three unanswered goals in the third period to skate away with a 3-2 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday. The win came after Carolina was blown out 8-2 by the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday. Carolina is 9-4-0 since losing four of their first seven games of the season and hasn't dropped consecutive games since a three-game losing streak from Oct. 19-24. The Hurricanes followed that slide up with three straight wins but haven't won more than two in a row since.

The Miami Heat will play host to the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday night in their last group-stage game of the NBA's in-season tournament. Milwaukee (3-0 in the tournament) would win the East Group B with a victory on Tuesday. If Miami (2-1) wins and the New York Knicks (2-1) defeat the Charlotte Hornets, it would come down to point differential over the four games. The Bucks are coming off a 108-102 win over visiting Portland. Milwaukee rallied from a 26-point deficit -- the Bucks' biggest comeback in more than a decade. Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo posted 33 points, 16 rebounds and six assists. He also had the tie-breaking tip-in with 18.5 seconds left.

The first edition of the ACC-SEC Challenge presents challenges of its own for Mississippi State coach Chris Jans and Georgia Tech coach Damon Stoudamire. Jans and the Bulldogs (6-0), ranked No. 21 in the country, travel to Atlanta for their first true road game of the season on Tuesday. In his second season at the helm of the Mississippi State program, Jans has his team off to another hot start. In 2022, the Bulldogs won their first 11 games of the season and rose to as high as No. 15 in the polls. The team lost eight of its next nine games, quickly dropping from the rankings. This year's team has a different mindset about seeing that little number next to its name.

The Indiana Pacers boast the league's top offense, but coach Rick Carlisle knows his squad needs to improve on the defensive end in order to make a lengthy postseason run. The Pacers' ongoing journey to become a complete squad continues on Monday when they face the visiting Portland Trail Blazers in Indianapolis. All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton averages 25.4 points and 12.1 assists to lead Indiana, which is scoring a league-high 128.8 points per game. Haliburton had 26 points and Myles Turner added 23 in the Pacers' 136-113 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Friday. The win earned Indiana a quarterfinal home game in the NBA in-season tournament. Turner is averaging 17.2 points and 7.5 rebounds for the Pacers, who have scored at least 130 points in seven of their first 15 games. Indiana's high-scoring attack has been presenting new challenges for opposing coaches. That's all well and good but this total is an obvious trap.

While the New York Rangers enjoyed the sight of seven goals going into the net Saturday, the Buffalo Sabres had the exact opposite reaction while fishing seven pucks out of their own net on the same day. Two teams involved in separate seven-goal games get together Monday night when the Rangers host the Sabres. At 15-3-1, New York is on its third winning streak of at least three games and has 15 wins in 19 games or less for the first time in team history. The Rangers won their third straight game Saturday afternoon when they scored three goals in the first period in a 7-4 win over the Boston Bruins. Thirteen players recorded a point against Boston, highlighted by three-point showings from Chris Kreider and Artemi Panarin.

The Washington Wizards will return home for the second leg of a weekend back-to-back, looking to snap an eight-game losing streak when they host the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night. Washington continued its skid with a 131-128 loss Friday in an NBA in-season tournament matchup at Milwaukee. Four Wizards scored at least 20 points: Jordan Poole with a team-high 26, Kyle Kuzma and Tyus Jones each with 22, and Corey Kispert with 20 off the bench, but it wasn't enough to end a losing streak that began on Nov. 10. Kispert was 6 of 10 from 3-point range. It was his first game with multiple made attempts from deep since he went 3 of 7 on Nov. 15 vs. Dallas. For Kuzma and Poole, Friday was their second time in as many games both surpassing 20 points -- Poole with 24 on Wednesday at Charlotte, and Kuzma with a near-triple-double of 28 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds. Friday was also Washington's second straight loss of just three points.
