The major x-factor heading into Friday’s tilt is how Chicago will respond to being embarrassed on night one. Pride can be a surprisingly powerful asset in sport, even for a team that is grossly outmatched on paper. A Blackhawks team looking to prove a point, combined with a Lightning team that gets a little bit complacent, provides an easy path to two points for Chicago. Tampa’s tendency to get a little bit cute with the puck when they are feeling confident, which started to creep into their play late on Wednesday, needs to stay in the dressing room. This is a winnable game, but only if the Lightning play their game. While not much needs to change in terms of style or substance for Tampa Bay, there is expected to be one slight lineup tweak compared to Game 1. After sitting with the taxi squad in the opener for cap purposes, Tyler Johnson will make his season debut.

Sure, they may not win many games (much like Minnesota), but seeing players be able to move and try to generate offense is certainly more exciting than the slow, plodding hockey that can barely cross the blueline, and stays to the perimeter. Houston is coming off two games in which the team fell behind early and spent most of their energy getting back into the game. Against Indiana, the Rockets were even able to take the lead before failing offensively down the stretch. A lot of Houston’s woes can easily be attributed to injuries. The Rockets still have not had their full complement of players in any single game this season, and tonight probably won’t be the first time unless all three of Christian Wood (knee), Danuel House Jr. (back), and Ben McLemore (COVID protocols) are ready to play. Of course, that excuse is pretty weak when you compare Houston’s situation to the Orlando Magic’s. The Magic lost Markelle Fultz, one of the best stories in the NBA, to an ACL tear on Wednesday. As he enters his sixth NBA season, can Booker and the Suns build on the momentum they found in the bubble and couple individual success with team success and end the team’s 10-year playoff drought?
