Who defends worse than the Blazers? Why, the Charlotte Hornets! The Blazers are 27th in the NBA with a defensive rating of 112.4, but the Hornets are dead last at 114.0. Woof. We are in store for a contrast of styles in how the teams give up points though. Charlotte is 29th in the league at not giving up second-chance points, while Portland is actually 5th best. The problem for the Blazers is that opponents don’t have much need for second-chance points since they score so often at the first opportunity.

We know that Laurant Brossoit will get the start for Vegas, his first in a week. Last time out he gave up four goals on just 25 shots against the Flyers, in a 4-3 loss. I didn’t think Vegas played well in front of him at times, we saw Dadonov lose sight of Kevin Hayes in a 4 on 4 situation, which resulted in the Flyer's first goal. He does have a tendency to lose track of the puck at times but at the same time Vegas has to do a better job of clearing out space for him but there are times where we’ve seen him get beat on shots that he should have. I think he’s a decent enough 5 on 5 GT but it’s on the PK where I worry about Brossoit. I think this is a chance for Vegas to be real aggressive early because the Rangers have not come out strong of late all though they seemed to find their pace in their recent games against Colorado and Arizona.

The Rockets are incredibly thin right now. Kevin Porter Jr. and Jalen Green were their starting guards. Eric Gordon was the first backup guard off the bench. Danuel House Jr. is a key rotation piece, and Christian Wood is still Houston’s best big man. With so many players out, it wasn’t surprising that Houston’s defense struggled to contain Cleveland’s offense. I expect more of the same tonight. Remember, minute redistribution leads to higher scoring games because players want to impress with offense.

The Rhode Island Rams have been solid to begin this season as they are 7-3 to begin the regular season. They are being led by sophomore center Makhel Mitchell so far and that is going to help them progress throughout the regular season. They are coming off a 72-62 home win over the Sacred Heart Pioneers. The biggest problem that popped up was the fact they allowed the Pioneers to shoot 43.8 percent from the field throughout the game. The defense needs to step up more consistently as they are allowing 36.4 percent of shots to fall against them and are giving up 62.8 ppg, which is 52nd in the nation. The Hornets will now host the Philadelphia 76ers tonight and in a bizarre scheduling quirk, the two teams will play again on Wednesday in Charlotte. Two teams who have played well defensively always makes me look at the over because the public is certain to be on the under, creating a low risk wager with a favorable number. Key defensemen Drew Doughty and Sean Walker both set to miss significant time due to injury. So far, the defense and penalty kill have held up pretty well, with journeyman Matt Roy and youngsters Tobias Bjornfot and Mikey Anderson being asked to shoulder much of the load. The defensive luck runs out for the Kings tonight.

What’s great about having a one and one A goaltender is that they’re constantly pushing each other to be better. Add that to the fact that the Panthers are playing extremely well in front of both of their netminders through seven games. He shifted almost everyone around to see if they would have better offensive chemistry. He took his top line of Zacha, Hischier, and Jesper Bratt, who has been on the ice for just one 5 on 5 goals this season and dispersed them among the top three lines. Josiah Gray earned his first big-league victory by allowing two runs over six innings Wednesday versus the Marlins. He struck out eight on the night. Gray pitched well enough to win at least a couple of his first five starts for the Nationals, but he didn't have much luck then, and he had really struggled of late, giving up 22 runs over 17 1/3 innings in his previous four starts. The Nationals have to be thrilled that he bounced back in this game as they had high hopes for the youngster. He comes into this very difficult road start against the Rockies carrying a 5.79 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, with a 52/23 K/BB ratio over 51 innings.

The Jets did a much better job running the ball in Week 2 than in Week 1. They ran for 152 yards against the Patriots after gaining just 45 the week before against Carolina. Running the ball effectively will be huge in this one, to take pressure off Zach Wilson. If they run effectively, the game will go under the total.

The Als appear strong on paper. And there’s no doubt Vernon Adams has some commendable attributes along with the potential of becoming an electrifying player. But the 28-year-old, now in his fifth CFL season, continues to be dogged by erratic play and has been unable to produce consecutive consistent efforts this season. Adams passed for 270 yards Saturday night against the B.C. Lions, but completed only 16 of 36 attempts, although his receivers — especially Eugene Lewis — were guilty of repeatedly dropping passes. Adams failed to generate a touchdown, was intercepted twice and fumbled once.

His 8.3 barrel percentage is the highest in his career. The Royals are projected to send rookie left-hander Daniel Lynch to the mound for this road tilt. The young southpaw got charged with three runs -- one earned -- on two hits and a walk over two official innings of work in his last start against the A’s. He was pulled with the bases loaded in the top of the third. Lynch could be seen wincing as he delivered what was his final pitch of the afternoon in the top of the third inning.
