The visiting Atlanta Hawks will be out to gain a split of their two-game series with the Toronto Raptors on Friday and end their five-game losing streak. Toronto halted its own four-game losing streak Wednesday night with a 135-128 victory over Atlanta in the series opener. The Raptors, not known for their ability to hit from long range, shot 52.9 percent from 3-point range (18 of 34). Atlanta made it close when Bogdan Bogdanovic sank two 3-pointers to cut Toronto's lead to 109-107 with 6:26 left in the game. Jakob Poeltl blocked Hawks guard Trae Young on two occasions as the Raptors regained control.

Under normal circumstances, shooting 34.4 percent from the floor while committing 16 turnovers makes for a lamentable evening, but the Houston Rockets were again saved by their defense and rebounding on Monday. The Rockets will seek to extend their home-court winning streak to 11 games on Wednesday against the Memphis Grizzlies following their 93-82 win over the San Antonio Spurs. They held the Spurs to a season-low point total while winning with their lowest point total in seven years. Before Monday, Houston had lost 52 of its last 53 games when scoring fewer than 100 points. This current iteration of the Rockets features the second-best defense in the NBA according to defensive rating, allowing 108.2 points per 100 possessions. That ability to shackle the opposition has proven to be the salve needed on nights when shots aren't falling with regularity. The Rockets also posted a plus-nine rebounding margin against the Spurs, marking the seventh time in the last nine games Houston has outrebounded its opponent. The Rockets improved to 7-3 in such games this season behind Tari Eason grabbing a career-high 14 boards off the bench while Alperen Sengun, 17th in the NBA in rebounding, matched his season average with nine.

The Los Angeles Lakers will look to get back on the winning track when they travel to play the hapless San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday in the first of two games between the teams in three nights in the Alamo City. The Lakers travel south for the second game of a road back-to-back after taking a 127-125 loss at Dallas on Tuesday that snapped their season-best, four-game winning streak. Included in that winning stretch was the championship game of the NBA's inaugural in-season tournament, not a regular-season contest, but that success didn't carry over to Tuesday. Anthony Davis led Los Angeles with 37 points and 11 rebounds against the Mavericks, while LeBron James finished with 33 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. Austin Reaves added 22 points off the bench, and Taurean Prince tallied 15. The Lakers outshot Dallas 53.8 percent to 49.4 percent, outrebounded the hosts 40-36 and made 15 of their 29 3-point attempts. However, they made just 12 of 18 free-throw attempts. Dallas hit 18 of 21 free throws to make up the difference in field-goal shooting.

At just past the quarter pole of the NBA season, the Miami Heat have already lost four games during which they led by at least 16 points. On Wednesday night against the visiting Charlotte Hornets, the Miami Heat will try to grab a lead and keep it -- easier said than accomplished in the NBA. On Monday in Charlotte, the Heat led by as many as 14 points but had to hold on for a 116-114 win. Charlotte's Terry Rozier, who made eight 3-pointers and scored a game-high 34 points, nearly won the game with a half-court shot that bounced off the backboard at the buzzer. Perhaps there's a reason for those struggles as the Heat are playing without their top two scorers: Tyler Herro (ankle injury) missed his 15th straight game on Monday, and Bam Adebayo (hip) has missed six of Miami's past nine contests. Herro averaged 22.9 points through eight games, and Adebayo is averaging 22.3. The one healthy member of Miami's "Big Three" is Jimmy Butler, who is averaging 21.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.2 steals.

The Golden State Warriors are once again experiencing difficulties winning on the road. The Warriors are saddled with a five-game road losing streak and will look to halt it on Tuesday night when they visit the Phoenix Suns. The recent struggles are reminiscent of last season, when Golden State was 11-30 on the road. Only three teams had worse road records. Golden State will look to end this season's slide when it takes on Phoenix, which hopes to have Bradley Beal, Kevin Durant and Devin Booker on the floor together for the first time. Beal is slated to play Tuesday for just the fourth time this season and first since Nov. 12. He has been plagued by back problems and has sat out the past 12 games. Durant (ankle) is listed as questionable and missed the Suns' 114-106 home loss to the Sacramento Kings on Friday. He was limited in Monday's non-contact practice. Beal was acquired from the Washington Wizards in the offseason to form a trio with Booker and Durant. But Beal and Booker have yet to play in the same game this season while Beal has played in just three games with Durant.

The Los Angeles Lakers will look to build on their NBA in-season tournament title when they visit the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night. The Lakers captured the inaugural event in impressive fashion, winning seven straight games by a total of 135 points, capped by a 123-109 triumph over the Indiana Pacers on Saturday night in Las Vegas. Unfortunately for Los Angeles, its regular-season form hasn't been nearly as good. The Lakers have won just five of their past 12 non-tournament games, having alternated losses and wins over their past 10. Flipping the switch from the bright lights of Las Vegas to just another December trip to Dallas might not be easy for the Lakers. On Sunday, LeBron James was in attendance in Los Angeles when his oldest son, Bronny, made his collegiate debut for Southern California. On Monday, the Lakers announced plans to raise the in-season tournament banner into the rafters when they return home from a three-game trip to face the New York Knicks on Dec. 18. When the Lakers travel to play the Mavericks on Tuesday, Dallas might be without Kyrie Irving, who sat out the team's 120-113 win at Memphis on Monday due to a bruised right heel.

On a three-game winning streak to match their longest of the brief James Harden era, the Los Angeles Clippers finally are finding a stride with their new look as they host the Portland Trail Blazers Monday. Yet, even as different as the Clippers have become after adding a pure scorer like Harden, there was a throwback look to their 117-103 road victory against the Utah Jazz on Friday when Kawhi Leonard was the clear focus of the offense. Leonard scored a season-best 41 points Friday on 23 shot attempts (he made 14). Paul George added 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting as Leonard and George combined to go 8 of 13 from 3-point range. Big man Ivica Zubac had 18 points and 12 rebounds in a team-best 42 minutes. As for Harden, he continues to have more of a passive role in the offense, at least by his standards. Harden scored 12 points against the Jazz on 2-of-8 shooting and dished out a team-best eight assists.

The Philadelphia 76ers will look for their third straight victory when they host the reeling Washington Wizards on Monday. While the Sixers have been winning recently, there's cause for concern regarding reigning Most Valuable Player Joel Embiid. Late in the Sixers' 125-114 win over the Atlanta Hawks on Friday, Embiid appeared to tweak his left knee after taking an awkward step on a drive to the basket. Embiid had 38 points and 14 rebounds but was noticeably limping at the end. Embiid participated in practice Sunday and is listed as questionable for Monday. Tyrese Maxey continued his strong play for the Sixers with 30 points, seven assists and zero turnovers.

The Charlotte Hornets offense came in different doses in their most recent game, and it could be a good thing for a team searching for a formula that breeds consistency. The Miami Heat need to find some order as well, hoping to get back on track Monday night against the host Hornets at Charlotte, N.C. The Heat have lost five of their last seven games, including Friday night's 111-99 loss to the visiting Cleveland Cavaliers. The Hornets had to like their balance when four players scored 20 or more points in a 119-116 victory over the visiting Toronto Raptors on Friday night. That group was led by Gordon Hayward's 24 points. Charlotte shot a season-best 55.7 percent from the field. The uptick in Charlotte's offense appears to have multiple facets.

Both clubs are 6-0 in the in-season tournament, each going 4-0 in group play before posting two knockout-round wins. But there is more than money at stake for the Pacers, a feel-good story over the first quarter of the NBA season. Indiana hasn't reached the playoffs since the 2019-20 season and is looking to take a major step upward. The Pacers view the title game as that jumpstart.

Indiana hasn't reached the playoffs since the 2019-20 season and is looking to take a major step upward. The Pacers view the title game as that jumpstart.

The Brooklyn Nets probably would prefer to win a game without 43 lead changes but feel reassured Mikal Bridges can deliver winning plays in the final minutes. After following up a 42-point performance with a game-winning basket, Bridges and the Nets will attempt to go three games over .500 for the first time this season when they host the Washington Wizards on Friday in New York. Since losing three straight to Miami, Philadelphia and Atlanta Nov. 16-22, the Nets are 5-1 in their past six games. The only thing keeping them from a six-game winning streak was allowing 21 3-pointers in a 129-128 loss to the Charlotte Hornets on Nov. 30. Feeling disappointed with the loss to Charlotte, Bridges has significantly helped the Nets to their past two wins. He scored 26 of his 42 in the first quarter of Saturday's 129-101 rout over the Orlando Magic, then came through immensely down the stretch of a wild 114-113 victory in Atlanta Wednesday.

Paolo Banchero offered another reminder why he's one of the league's emerging stars on Wednesday, when he scored a career-high 42 points in a 121-111 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Banchero can build on that stellar performance when Orlando takes on the visiting Detroit Pistons on Friday. Detroit dropped its 18th straight game and fell to 2-19 overall in a 116-102 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday. The Pistons will need to find a way to slow down the 21-year-old Banchero, who shot 16-of-26 from the field in the loss to Cleveland and became the second-youngest player in franchise history to score 40 points. Shaquille O'Neal was 20 years old when he scored 40.

LeBron James is highly energized about the prospects of leading the Los Angeles Lakers to the inaugural NBA Cup. The top-seeded Lakers are one victory away from reaching the final as they battle the third-seeded New Orleans Pelicans in the West semifinal of the NBA in-season tournament on Thursday night at Las Vegas. The victor will face the East semifinal winner, either the Milwaukee Bucks or Indiana Pacers, in Saturday's championship game. The first-time event wouldn't seem to be that much of a big deal to a 19-time All-Star like James, who has four regular-season MVPs, four championship rings and the NBA's all-time leading scorer title on his resume.

The Portland Trail Blazers and Golden State Warriors have an opportunity to get well acquainted when they meet for the first of three times in 18 days Wednesday night in San Francisco. The West Coast rivals were scheduled to duel just three times this season, including just once in San Francisco. But the inaugural NBA in-season tournament caused regular-season schedule changes this week, with each of the teams eliminated in the group phase required to take on games Wednesday and Friday. The Warriors have dominated the Trail Blazers in recent years, winning six of seven over the past two seasons and five in a row at home over the past three seasons. The home wins have come by an average of 12.8 points. The last time the clubs met, the Warriors put up 55 points in the first quarter of a 157-101 shellacking in Portland last April. The Trail Blazers were without Damian Lillard, Anfernee Simons and Jerami Grant at the time. All three could be missing again in the rematch eight months later. Lillard has been dealt to the Milwaukee Bucks; Simons suffered ligament damage in his right thumb in the preseason and has yet to play this year; and Grant has entered concussion protocol after getting hit in the head Saturday in a game against the Utah Jazz. Simons and Grant could be back by Friday, but they are considered questionable at best for the trip to Golden State. Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups hasn't given up hope of seeing Simons in action in San Francisco after watching him practice this week.

This time, Bridges is coming off his fastest start to a game in his career, and the Nets hope to pair another productive night from him with another win Wednesday night when they visit the Hawks. This game was scheduled last week when both teams were eliminated from the in-season tournament. Bridges and the Nets are visiting Atlanta for the second time in two weeks. On Nov. 22, Bridges scored 30 of his points after halftime when the Nets trailed by 12 after one quarter and by 10 at halftime before taking a 147-145 overtime loss. Since Bridges made 16 of 31 shots at Atlanta, the Nets are 4-1 in their past five games. Brooklyn's only loss in that span was a 129-128 setback to the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday when they allowed 21 3-pointers. Bridges did not score more than 24 points in the first four games after the Atlanta visit before erupting for 42 in Saturday's 129-101 rout of the Orlando Magic. Bridges shot 12-of-20 and made 15 free throws. He put up 26 points in the opening quarter, the third-most productive opening period in team history.

The Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers vie for the distinction of being the first semifinalist in the NBA in-season tournament when they duel Monday night in Indianapolis. Indiana earned the home court based on being one of two Eastern Conference teams to make a perfect run through its tournament group play, having dispatched the Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers, Atlanta Hawks, and Detroit Pistons. Boston also won its group but needed a point-differential tie-breaker to get the nod over the Orlando Magic and Brooklyn Nets after all three had a loss. The Celtics were blown out 113-96 at Orlando, requiring them to pour it on the Chicago Bulls in a 124-97 finale that tipped the point-differential scales. The Pacers and Celtics have met once this season, and it wasn't close. On Nov. 1, Boston got 30 points from Jayson Tatum in just 27 minutes in a 155-104 home romp when Indiana was missing star Tyrese Haliburton. Boston enters the game in better form than Indiana. The Celtics have risen to the top of the East regular-season standings with five-, six- and three-game winning streaks, the latter compiled in their last three games against the Hawks, Bulls, and 76ers. Boston has continued to win without Kristaps Porzingis, who remains out with a calf injury. The Celtics made up for the absence with seven players reaching double-figure points in Friday's 125-119 home win over the 76ers. The group included starters Tatum (21), Derrick White (21), Jaylen Brown (20) and Al Horford (20). The key to the sustained short-handed success, Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said, is Horford, who in his last two games as a starter has totaled 36 points, 15 rebounds, nine assists, and five blocks, shooting 13 for 17 from the floor.

The arrival of Victor Wembanyama to the San Antonio Spurs in the 2023 NBA Draft was reminiscent of Zion Williamson's arrival with the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2019 draft. Detroit, which will be playing the second leg of a back-to-back set, took its 15th consecutive loss on Wednesday, a 133-107 decision against the visiting Los Angeles Lakers. The skid is the longest in Pistons history within a single season. "Even though we're in this low hole, we still have belief," Detroit forward Isaiah Stewart, who scored 12 points against the Lakers, said postgame. "We had one of the toughest practices (on Tuesday). We're still staying together. The energy's still good. So we just have to figure it out out there." Cade Cunningham put up a team-high 15 points for the Pistons, his sixth consecutive game scoring in double figures, though produced his lowest total of that stretch. Isaiah Livers chipped in 14 points off the bench, and rookie Ausar Thompson recorded 12 points. Cunningham is averaging 22.8 points per game over the past six and a team-leading 21.8 for the season. The Knicks will aim to complete their homestand with a 3-1 mark after routing the Charlotte Hornets 115-91 on Tuesday in NBA in-season tournament competition. Utah Jazz coach Will Hardy said he wasn't trying to put his players on alert when he mentioned that he wanted them to "play hard and pass" and that changes might be in order after an ugly loss to Portland last week. Whatever the intentions were, it has worked so far. The Jazz swept the New Orleans Pelicans in back-to-back home games -- 105-100 on Saturday and 114-112 on Monday -- after Simone Fontecchio and Omer Yurtseven were inserted into the starting lineup. Incidentally, Lauri Markkanen missed both games with left hamstring soreness and his status remains uncertain heading into Wednesday's game at the Memphis Grizzlies. Yurtseven averaged 6.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and two blocks, with Fontecchio scoring 14 on Monday after contributing 10 points in Saturday's win. The Jazz passed with efficiency while holding on for the most recent two-point win, dishing out 31 assists on their 37 field goals. Utah also hit 17 3-pointers, including six in the fourth quarter.

The Boston Celtics can advance to the knockout stage of the NBA's in-season tournament, but they'll need a dominating performance against the visiting Chicago Bulls on Tuesday night - plus some help from the Brooklyn Nets to do it. The Celtics could win East Group C if several outcomes go Boston's way - including a Celtics win over the Bulls and a Brooklyn victory over Toronto on Tuesday. That would leave Boston, Brooklyn and Orlando in a three-way tie for first place in the East Group C standings, each at 3-1. The group winner would then be determined by the second tiebreaker, which is point differential. Boston's point differential is zero, Orlando's is plus-22 and Brooklyn's is plus-8. The Celtics would need a 23-plus point victory and hope that the Nets win by fewer than 15 points. The six group winners and two wild-card teams advance to the quarterfinals of the in-season tournament, which concludes with semifinals and the final in December. There is also a path for the Celtics to reach the knockout stage as a wild card if they beat the Bulls. In that scenario, Boston would have to finish with a better point differential than the other Eastern Conference teams that don't finish first in their group. Following Sunday's 113-103 victory over Atlanta, Boston's Jayson Tatum made it clear he's not in favor of point differential being used as a tiebreaker.
