Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens are in a familiar spot - leading the AFC North through Week 10. The past two seasons, they've been passed down the stretch by Cincinnati. A win this week would make that prospect a good deal less likely in 2023. The Ravens host the Bengals on Thursday night with a chance to sweep the season series against Cincinnati and take a 2 1/2-game lead over the last-place Bengals. Every team in the AFC North has a winning record, and Baltimore's 33-31 loss to Cleveland last weekend tightened the race considerably.

Boston College brings the baggage of its first loss in six games to Pitt on Thursday night, but the Panthers are unpacking much bigger problems. BC was outgained 600-262 (including 363-124 on the ground) in suffering its first defeat since Sept. 23.

Things are so bleak for Pitt at the moment that the university's athletic director put out a statement to the Post-Gazzette on Monday saying, in part, that "this season is not up to Coach Narduzzi's or Pitt's standards" before indicating that Narduzzi will be back in 2024 to help turn around the program he helped resurrect with an ACC championship and consecutive Top 25 finishes the past two seasons. The Panthers have already clinched the worst finish in Narduzzi's nine seasons at the helm. First priority for Pitt on Thursday is finding a way to slow BC quarterback Thomas Castellanos, who ranks second in the country among quarterbacks with 806 rushing yards. He also has 10 rushing touchdowns. Veilleux, meanwhile, has minus-14 net rushing yards on the season and has more interceptions (eight) than passing touchdowns (seven). Yarnell is just 5 of 8 for 123 yards and a touchdown in limited action. The Panthers have scored a total of 44 points during their four-game losing streak. Pitt leads the all-time series 17-15. BC has won the last two matchups.

So the surging Jaguars (6-2) will be taking an educated guess into Sunday’s game against the reeling 49ers (5-3), a matchup that features Young’s debut with his new team.

ixth-ranked Oregon will try to move one game closer to reaching its fourth Pac-12 championship game in five seasons when it welcomes visiting Southern California to Eugene, Ore., on Saturday. The Ducks (8-1, 5-1) held firm at No. 6 in the College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday, tops among all one-loss teams. They roll into Saturday's matchup winners of three straight, all by at least 14 points, after last week's 63-19 blowout of Cal. Quarterback Bo Nix enters the game a rising candidate for the Heisman Trophy with 2,723 yards on 235-of-301 passing with 25 touchdowns against just two interceptions. Nix has also rushed for five touchdowns to pace the nation's most prolific scoring offense at 47.4 points per game. USC is second in the nation at 45.5 ppg. The Trojans (7-3, 5-2) have scored no fewer than 32 points in any of their conference games behind reigning Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams. Williams went 27 of 35 for 312 yards with three touchdowns and rushed for another score last week vs. Washington, but the USC defense surrendered a season high in points for the second time in as many weeks in a 52-42 loss. The Trojans gave up 49 points a week prior in a one-point win at Cal and come into Oregon having allowed at least 41 points in five of their last six outings.

It's a significant turnaround from West Virginia's two-game losing streak in October. No. 17 Oklahoma (7-2, 4-2) dropped back-to-back, one-possession games -- a 38-33 loss to Kansas on Oct. 28 and a 27-24 loss to Oklahoma State last weekend in the expected finale of the Bedlam series. Boston College and Syracuse are trending in opposite directions entering Friday night's Atlantic Coast Conference contest on the Orange's home turf. The Eagles (5-3, 2-2) have won four in a row, while the Orange (4-4, 0-4) have dropped four straight and are the only remaining winless team in ACC play. Boston College allowed at least 27 points in each of its first four games but has not yielded more than 24 in any game during its current winning streak. The Eagles are coming off a 21-14 triumph against UConn in a game in which the Eagles' Kye Robichaux ran for 112 yards and two touchdowns. Syracuse, meanwhile, is looking to recover from a brutal stretch in which it lost to Clemson, North Carolina, Florida State and Virginia Tech by a combined margin of 150-34. On the bright side, the Orange have won two straight matchups with the Eagles, including 32-23 a season ago. Friday's contest will be the Eagles' third road game in the last four outings, although the team certainly won't be getting any sympathy cards from the Orange. Syracuse has not played at home since its Sept. 30 loss against Clemson. (FLM)

It took all of four quarters for Will Levis to offer a glimpse of why the Tennessee Titans were so high on him in the draft. Throwing for four touchdowns in your debut - three of which came on the kind of downfield heaves that left scouts in awe - will do that. Levis and the Titans (3-4) don't have much time to prep for an encore. Tennessee visits Pittsburgh (4-3) on Thursday night with a chance to prove their electric win over Atlanta wasn't a fluke but a sign of things to come. It's a game Levis circled when the schedule came out even though he was buried on the depth chart at the time. Not anymore. Ryan Tannehill is expected to miss a second straight game with a sprained right ankle, meaning Levis will run onto the Acrisure Stadium turf as the starter for now ... and quite possibly for good. Preseason goals have been adjusted for TCU and Texas Tech heading into Thursday night's Big 12 Conference showdown in Lubbock. But that doesn't mean there will be any less intensity when the rivals meet. The visiting Horned Frogs (4-4, 2-3) have found life more treacherous this season compared with 2022, when a stretch of strong play blended with good fortune to vault the team into the national championship game. For the Red Raiders (3-5, 2-3), a spate of injuries -- especially at quarterback -- and some close-call losses have punctured the chance to fulfill various preseason prognostications that pegged them as a conference sleeper. Now the two proud programs will collide, each coming off a bye week and each eager to bounce back after tough-to-stomach losses. On Oct. 21, TCU absorbed a 41-3 rout at Kansas State, and Texas Tech lost 27-14 at BYU in a game when the Red Raiders' five turnovers derailed any chance of the team keeping pace with the Cougars. Though he downplayed it, this will be the first trip back to Lubbock for TCU's Sonny Dykes as a head coach at the school where his father, Spike Dykes, won 82 games from 1986-99.(FLM)

With Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts expected to play through a left knee injury, his teammates on the defensive side of the ball should be expected to ratchet up the pressure on Howell when the NFC East rivals meet Sunday at Washington. Philadelphia (6-1) has the second-most sacks in the NFL, and Howell is the most-sacked QB in the league. That combination could make it a long afternoon for the Commanders (3-4). In this situation last year at FedEx Field, the Eagles sacked Carson Wentz nine times, forced two fumbles, and recovered one of them. Washington's offensive line is arguably worse, Howell is not as experienced at picking up blitzes, and Philadelphia comes in with the league's top defense against the run. I don't think the knee will hinder Hurts. The game flies over.

Brock Purdy's fast rise with the San Francisco 49ers has had the quality of a feel-good movie, the rare quarterback drafted in the seventh round to run the offense for a Super Bowl contender by the end of his rookie year and pick up in his second season where he left off. Even following the worst start of his young career, a 19-17 loss at Cleveland that included his first interception of 2023 and stripped the 49ers (5-1) of their undefeated status, Purdy is sitting pretty. He just probably won't be able to stand still in his attempt to get back on track. San Francisco plays at Minnesota on Monday night, and Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores is sure to empty the playbook with as many different pressures as he can find. “You can never just relax and just call a play or run a play, because there’s always a thousand things that can go wrong just because of the threat of what they do in any situation,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. “They’re on you a lot with that. They get you to make mistakes in that way.” The Vikings have sent five or more rushers on 60.5% percent of passing plays they've faced this season, the most by any NFL team since Sportradar began tracking blitzes in 2007. The next most frequent blitzing team was Arizona (51.1%) in 2013. The league average for 2023, according to Sportradar, is 29%. The ultra-aggressive strategy, in an era when extra rushers are being used less often in favor of thicker and safer zone coverage, has yielded mixed results for the Vikings (2-4).

ndrafted rookie Tyson Bagent will start at quarterback for the Chicago Bears when they host Las Vegas on Sunday with Justin Fields recovering from a dislocated right thumb. The Raiders will also be going with a backup quarterback, with all signs pointing to veteran Brian Hoyer replacing the injured Jimmy Garoppolo. Las Vegas' other option is rookie Aidan O'Connell. Both starters left games last week. Fields got hurt when he was sacked early in the third quarter against Minnesota. Chicago (1-5) lost for the 15th time in 16 games, falling 19-13 to the Vikings. Garoppolo missed the second half of a 21-17 win over New England with a back injury. Bagent, who went undrafted last spring after a record-setting career at Division II Shepherd University in West Virginia, is ready for his opportunity. He said he and his dad, Travis, had a feeling early on that he would play in the NFL. But he wasn't sure he would get a chance to start again after his final college game.

Two years ago, it took Dan Campbell a dozen games to earn his first victory as coach of the Detroit Lions. That win would have come much earlier if not for Baltimore's Justin Tucker, whose 66-yard field goal handed Campbell and his team a crushing home defeat in September of that season. Campbell and the Lions stayed the course through that difficult 2021 season. After the loss to the Ravens, quarterback Jared Goff said defiantly that “the gut punches will stop” - and now, as Detroit prepares to face Baltimore again Sunday, Motown's team is in a much different place. This is a matchup of division leaders. In fact, the Lions are one of five teams in a tie for the NFL's best record. This will be the first home game in four weeks for the Ravens (4-2), although in one sense that might be a relief for the Lions, given what Tucker has done at Detroit's Ford Field. He kicked a 61-yard field goal there to beat the Lions in 2013, then outdid himself with a record-long boot from 66 two seasons ago. That was the third game of Campbell's first season. The Lions didn't win one until December.

If a rivalry game with Commander-in-Chief's Trophy implications wasn't enough to get Air Force fired up, perhaps a spot in the national rankings will do the trick. The No. 22 Falcons find themselves among the top 25 teams in the country for the first time since 2019, and they will look to keep climbing on Saturday when they face Navy in Annapolis, Md. Air Force (6-0) moved into the rankings thanks to a 34-27 victory over Wyoming last weekend. The Falcons leaned on their rushing attack, amassing 356 yards on the ground, including a team-high 111 from quarterback Zac Larrier. Larrier, however, injured his knee late in the game and was ruled out for the Navy game. Backup Jensen Jones will take over at quarterback. Although the win pushed Air Force into the national spotlight, coach Troy Calhoun knows his team can't concern itself with the extra attention it's about to receive.

Lawrence's injury occurred in the final minutes of a 37-20 victory over Indianapolis on Sunday, leaving him little more than three full days to recover before Jacksonville's offense goes up against one of the top-performing defenses in the NFL. Now that their 14-game slide is over, it sure seems like a good time for the Chicago Bears to start a different kind of streak. After all, they won't have to worry about containing one of the NFL's most electrifying players when they host Minnesota on Sunday. That's because Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson is out with a hamstring injury. The Bears (1-4) won 40-20 at Washington behind another solid performance by the offense to stop a skid that dated to a Week 7 victory at New England last year. They haven't won two in a row since Weeks 16 and 17 of the 2021 season, when they beat Seattle and the New York Giants. They went 3-14 last year, the worst record in the NFL. The Bears' chance of putting together back-to-back wins seems significantly better with Jefferson on injured reserve. The 2022 NFL Offensive Player of the Year slipped on the U.S. Bank Stadium turf last week while trying to make a cut on his route during a third-down pass deep in Kansas City territory. He grabbed the back of his right leg and limped slowly to the sideline in the fourth quarter of a 27-20 loss. Jefferson hasn't missed a game since the Vikings (1-4) drafted him with the No. 22 overall pick in 2020. He has 36 catches for 571 yards and three touchdowns this season, and his absence for at least the next four games figures to have a profound impact. The Vikings always knew which receiver they were featuring, no matter the opponent.

Ja'Marr Chase says he's been getting open all season. Even during the first three games, as injured quarterback Joe Burrow struggled to get the Bengals' pass game on track, Chase claimed to be like the 7-Eleven convenience store - always open. The Burrow-to-Chase connection - it's been a thing since they played together at LSU and won a national championship in the 2019 season - produced three touchdowns and reignited the Bengals last week in a 34-20 confidence-building win over the Arizona Cardinals. Burrow looked far more comfortable scrambling and throwing. His lack of mobility had been a struggle all season with the lingering effects of a strained calf muscle. He said Wednesday that it's “pretty close” to being 100% healed. Now the Bengals have a chance to win two in a row, go into the bye week at .500 and try to keep building momentum on the other side. Cincinnati hosts the well-rested Seattle Seahawks (3-1) on Sunday. After a loss in the season opener at home against the Los Angeles Rams, the Seahawks have won three straight before their bye week behind some first- and second-year players making major contributions as well as 33-year-old quarterback Geno Smith

Ron Rivera understands what the Chicago Bears are going through. In his first three seasons as coach in Washington, the former Bears linebacker and assistant dealt with one off-the-field distraction after another, from the NFL and Congress investigating owner Dan Snyder's dealings to the Drug Enforcement Administration raiding the facility and home of trainer Ryan Vermillion. Earlier this season, Rivera relished a line of questions about the long snapper situation because if that was the Commanders' biggest problem, it's good to just be worried about football. Not so much with the Bears, who are mired in chaos off the field and winless on it. They visit Washington on Thursday night with a player in exile for undisclosed reasons, their defensive coordinator gone for what he said was health and family reasons, and little reason to believe they're primed for their first victory in nearly a year.
