Georgia will look to extend its winning streak to four games when it visits Georgia Tech on Tuesday in Atlanta. The Bulldogs (7-2) are coming off a 68-46 win over visiting Florida A&M on Friday, while Georgia Tech (5-3) pulled away for an 81-63 victory over Northeastern on Friday for its second win in its past five games. Georgia had four players out against the Rattlers -- Kario Oquendo (13.7 points per game, sore knee), Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe (5.0 ppg, right ankle), leading scorer Terry Roberts (14 ppg, illness) and center Frank Anselem (3.1 ppg, illness). "You're already searching offensively, and now you're searching at another level," first-year Georgia coach Mike White said, adding all four will be game-time decisions against the Yellow Jackets. "You've got to adapt, right? We told guys at shootaround, 'Hey, you all want more opportunity, (well) here it comes.'" Mardrez McBride responded by recording 15 points and nine rebounds, while Jabri Abdur-Rahim added 14 points and Braelen Bridges finished with 10 points and eight rebounds against the Rattlers. Georgia has already surpassed its win total from last year and is off to a strong start under White, who arrived after leading Florida for the previous seven seasons. He replaced Tom Crean, who was let go after the Bulldogs went 6-26 last season.

Visiting Northwestern and No. 20 Michigan State figure to be more intense than usual when they open their respective Big Ten schedules against each other Sunday in East Lansing, Mich. That's because the Wildcats and Spartans are coming off their worst losses of the season, so they'll be in the mood for redemption. Northwestern comes in at 5-2 but has dropped two straight. A 43-42 loss on Nov. 23 to then-No. 15 Auburn was forgivable since it was against a ranked opponent on a neutral court in Cancun, Mexico. But an 87-58 home loss to unranked Pittsburgh on Monday was more embarrassing. The Wildcats were outscored 50-30 in the second half. "It was just disappointing," head coach Chris Collins said. "I didn't think we played very well. I'll always be the one where if a team beats us and we're in character and we're playing with incredible fire, determination and all those things, I'll be the first one to tip my cap. "I just didn't have that feeling (Monday). I don't know if it was coming off the trip we had or whatever. (There are) no excuses to be had. We weren't who we've been the first six games." One feature Northwestern has that many teams don't is a veteran backcourt. Seniors Chase Audige and Boo Buie are the team's leading scorers (Buie averages 12.9 points per game, Audige 12.4 ppg) and playmakers who have played in a lot of tough environments. Just like the Wildcats, Michigan State will try to respond after a lopsided loss.

After coach Mick Cronin criticized the Bruins' defense in the Las Vegas defeats, UCLA responded with inspired defensive performance in blowouts of Pepperdine and Bellarmine. Despite the 2-0 week, UCLA dropped two spots in the rankings. The Bruins held Pepperdine to just 21-of-60 shooting (35 percent) from the floor in a 100-53 rout Nov. 23, then followed it up by forcing 20 turnovers in Sunday's 81-60 defeat of Bellarmine. Across those two victories, GG Jackson II averaged 15 points and nine boards and was named SEC Freshman of the Week. This season, Hurley returns two starters from that team with the most important being oft-injured big man Marcus Bagley. After arriving at ASU as a five-star recruit, Bagley played hurt all of that first season and turned down an opportunity to enter the NBA Draft. They'll play their third straight home game to open the season when Gardner-Webb visits Tuesday night in Chapel Hill, N.C. So far, the Tar Heels (2-0) were engaged in a tight game late in the first half against UNC Wilmington and trailed at halftime against College of Charleston. There was no time for Davis to sit by idly as he called his team "soft" during parts of the first two games. "I challenged all of them," Davis said. When Oklahoma hosts UNC-Wilmington on Tuesday in Norman, Okla., the Sooners should know full well not to take the Seahawks lightly. The Sooners' season started with a loss to Sam Houston and a narrow win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. During his team's season-opening four-game stretch against mid-majors, Oklahoma coach Porter Moser was asked about how much more difficult it has become to play such programs. "This transfer portal, I think it changes a lot of things in college basketball," Moser said. "All of a sudden teams get some additions." The Seahawks certainly fit the mold of building through the transfer portal, with five offseason additions that are averaging a combined 23 points and 15 rebounds per game during the first two games of the season. The biggest addition, so far, has been Donovan Newby, a transfer from Wisconsin-Milwaukee who has averaged 6.5 points and 2.5 rebounds for Wilmington. Another one of those transfers, Maleeck Harden-Hayes, said the additions have helped mold the Seahawks into a strong defensive and rebounding team.

Senior guard Demarius Jacobs paced the team with 19 points on 87.5 percent shooting, while junior guard Kaiyem Cleary added 17, and sophomore center Payton Sparks scored 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Six Cardinals scored in double digits versus Earlham. Sparks, the 2021 MAC Freshman of the Year, made his presence felt on both sides of the court.

Wake Forest will once again be relying on the transfer portal, with former Delaware player Andrew Carr, former Florida player Tyree Appleby, and former Kansas State player Davion Bradford coming in. The Demon Deacons opened the season with a 71-59 win against Fairfield. Daivien Williamson and Andrew Carr led the team with 14 points each. Wake Forest held Fairfield to 38.2% shooting from the field. The Demon Deacons have a lot of turnover in their roster from last season, but the team was able to use the transfer portal successfully last year, and Wake Forest will try to do so again during the 2022-2023 season.

For as bad as Penn was on offense in their opener, let's not forget that the Tiger defense looked nonexistent in their first. At this point, I expect the Quaker's offense to be better in this one with 13 points being too much to lay.

Akron (1-0) carries plenty of momentum into Friday's dustup as well after an 81-80 overtime win at home over South Dakota State in its season opener. Greg Tribble canned the game-winning free throw with 2.4 seconds left in the extra period to lift the Zips to the victory on Monday. Xavier Castaneda led Akron with a career-high 31 points that included an 8-of-12 showing from 3-point range. No. 1 ranked North Carolina will continue their four-game homestand on Friday night after what can be described as a sluggish start to the season with a 69-56 victory over UNC-Wilmington. The Tar Heels will welcome a familiar opponent to the Smith Center in College of Charleston, who will face off against North Carolina for the third consecutive year. In Hubert Davis' first season at the helm, North Carolina took a trip to The Palmetto State to face the Cougars in a non-conference matchup. Despite trailing 42-36 at halftime, the Tar Heels rallied to earn a 94-83 win on the road behind 24 points and 12 rebounds from Armando Bacot and 22 points from Caleb Love.

Replacing a head coach with more than 500 victories, four trips to the Final Four and two national championships would be a daunting challenge for some people. Not for Kyle Neptune. In Neptune's first game in place of Hall of Famer Jay Wright, No. 16 Villanova cruised past La Salle 81-68 on Monday. The Wildcats (1-0) will now face another Big 5 rival when they visit Temple on Friday in Philadelphia. There will be two more Big 5 games waiting against Pennsylvania and Saint Joseph's. "I get all the hype that's out there -- first game, Big 5 game, a new coach's first game," Neptune said. "Being a part of this program for so long, I think we have a unique resolve about playing and coaching for each other. That's truly all we think about. When you think that way, there's nothing to be nervous about." Caleb Daniels led the way with 24 points and 10 rebounds and Eric Dixon added 20 points and three blocked shots.

The Northern Iowa Panthers have played just one game of their regular season but if they're shooting statistics are any sign, Northern Iowa should fare well this season despite their opening night opponent being a division III team. Northern Iowa shot 59.7% overall and 40.6% from behind the three-point line. The Panthers took good care of the ball, turning it over only 12 times and the Northern Iowa defense forced Wartburg into 22 turnovers.

Tshiebwe, the reigning Naismith Award and Associated Press Player of the Year, sat out Monday's season-opening, 95-63 win over visiting Howard to continue his recovery from minor knee surgery on Oct. 13. "If he wants to play Friday, I'm going to have to work him out myself and see," Kentucky coach John Calipari said. Maryland men’s basketball is off to a good start, pulling away from Niagara, 71-49, in its first win of the season, and Kevin Willard’s first win as head coach. Par for the course in game one of a new era, it wasn't always pretty as Willard tinkered with lineups and offensive and defensive schemes. But, Maryland’s starters looked comfortable playing together and dominated when they were on the floor. The Terps now turn their attention to Western Carolina, which they tip off against Thursday at 7 p.m. at the XFINITY Center. Western Carolina lost its opener to Georgia and is by no means a difficult matchup for Maryland, but the Terps will still have to take care of business in their nonconference games against inferior opponents.
