When Big East rivals Seton Hall and Villanova face off Saturday night in Philadelphia, it will mark the first meeting between the programs' new head coaches, Shaheen Holloway and Kyle Neptune. Both young coaches have encountered their share of trials and tribulations in Year One, but while Villanova has begun to regain its footing, Seton Hall has the greater chance of the two to play some postseason basketball. The Pirates (15-10, 8-6 Big East) turned around a 1-4 league start by winning seven of eight games. That stretch was dented Wednesday in a 75-62 home loss to No. 23 Creighton. Seton Hall shot 50 percent in the first half and held a six-point lead with 16:49 to play, but Creighton shot an unstoppable 13-for-20 in the second half to pull away. The Pirates dropped to 0-6 against the top four teams in the Big East and missed out on a chance at a Quadrant 1 win for their resume.

Offensive production has been hard to come by for Nevada this season, as they are currently ranked 161st in college basketball at 72.5 points per game. A major reason for low-scoring totals is the fact that they have played at a below-average pace, and have struggled to knock down outside shots. As a team, the Wolf Pack’s 3-point shooting percentage sits at just 33.8%, placing them 270th in the NCAA.

The Musketeers scored the game's first nine points and built a 39-24 halftime lead. UConn came up short despite battling back and pulling within one point several times in the second half. Sanogo, who leads the Big East in scoring (16.9 points per game), was held to 11 points in that loss, but the Huskies received 28 points from Jordan Hawkins and 23 from Tristen Newton. Hawkins scored 26 points in the second half. "A really disappointing loss," UConn coach Dan Hurley said. "We became unhinged with that offensive start in the first five minutes. We did some things that we really didn't want to do offensively. That had a real negative effect on defense. Just a really, really tough loss for us to absorb." Xavier, ranked No. 13 at the time of the game, shot 53.4 percent overall and 10-for-20 from 3-point distance.

No. 10 Texas and No. 17 Baylor will continue one of the oldest rivalries in college basketball when they square off in a return to Big 12 Conference play on Monday in Austin, Texas. Both teams participated in Saturday's Big 12/SEC Challenge, with the Longhorns losing 82-71 at No. 4 Tennessee and Baylor outlasting Arkansas 67-64 at home. It was a brief respite from the conference's 18-game, round-robin battle that reaches the halfway point for both teams with Monday's dustup. The Longhorns (17-4, 6-2) head home after having a two-game winning streak snapped by the Volunteers. Texas trailed by 12 after scoring just 28 points in the first half. The starters scored just seven points before the break, with Marcus Carr and Timmy Allen -- their two leading point producers on the season -- held scoreless. The Longhorns saw Tennessee expand its lead to 22 points early in the second half. Texas drew to within 69-58 after Carr's jumper with 6:06 remaining but never really threatened down the stretch. Sir'Jabari Rice led Texas with 19 points off the bench, with Carr and Brock Cunningham adding 11 each for the Longhorns. Allen finished with six points. Interim coach Rodney Terry said Tennessee was the most physical team that Texas had faced all season, which was quite a statement considering how tough games have been in the Big 12.

Arkansas (14-6) bounced back from a four-game losing streak in a rough Southeastern Conference stretch to defeat Mississippi and LSU in a pair of home games. Baylor (15-5) has won five in a row, including Monday night's 75-69 home triumph over No. 9 Kansas. That has helped the Bears recover from losing their first three Big 12 games. Washington State is aiming for its first sweep of Arizona (17-3, 6-3) since the 2009-10 season. "I hope they consider us a rival," Cougars coach Kyle Smith said with a chuckle. Purdue enters its Thursday visit to Michigan on a six-game winning streak and back in possession of the top spot in the men's college basketball rankings. Don't get the No. 1 Boilermakers wrong, they'll take the lofty perch. But you can think again if you figure Purdue is content. "There's still a lot of improvement in every facet of our game," Boilermakers center Zach Edey said. "Offensively, defensively, rebounding, turnovers. We're never going to be satisfied with where we are." A 16-point lead against visiting Maryland nearly evaporated Sunday, but the Boilermakers (19-1, 8-1 Big Ten) held things together down the stretch. As did Edey. Purdue's dominant, 7-foot-4 center finished with 24 points and 16 rebounds to help the Boilermakers earn a 58-55 victory. Braden Smith followed with eight points and Fletcher Loyer added seven as the Boilermakers relied heavily on Edey's 16th double-double of the season. Purdue overcame committing 15 turnovers.

If anything is true about Oregon basketball, it is that the Ducks are difficult to figure out. They stunned then-No. 9 Arizona in blowout fashion on Jan. 14. They handed Utah a loss in Salt Lake City earlier this month. But on the flip side, the Ducks have suffered through poor shooting games in losses to lower-echelon conference teams, including Stanford last Saturday. Host Oregon (11-9, 5-4 Pac-12) gets a shot to atone for a 41-point effort at Colorado earlier this month with a rematch against the Buffaloes in Eugene, Ore., on Thursday. The Buffaloes (12-9, 4-6) blasted Oregon 68-41 at home on Jan. 5, with the Ducks shooting 26.9 percent and making just 1 of 14 3-pointers. This time, a Ducks' win would keep Oregon in the top half of the Pac-12 standings. Oregon is coming off a split in the Bay Area, with a blowout win at Cal and a loss at Stanford, where Jermaine Couisnard's 18 points led the way in defeat.

Providence is 11-0 at home this season and has won 13 straight home games dating back to last season. "The Big East is very, very deep coming out of Creighton and Marquette, two very hostile environments," Providence coach Ed Cooley said. "Coming home to feel the love from our crowd here is just phenomenal." Providence dropped one spot in this week's AP Top 25 after losing to the Bluejays and the Golden Eagles. In the bounce-back effort, a wire-to-wire win over the Blue Demons, Noah Locke led Providence with a career-high 29 points, sinking seven 3-pointers. In what has materialized into another tumultuous season for Georgetown, Hoyas head coach Patrick Ewing has pinpointed one of his team's many deficiencies entering a matchup against visiting DePaul on Tuesday night in Washington, D.C "Our defense is letting us down right now," Ewing said following Georgetown's 95-82 loss at then-No. 8 Xavier on Saturday. "... We have to be able to get stops when we need to get stops." The Hoyas (5-15, 0-9 Big East) let the Musketeers shoot 54.9 percent from the field, including 57.1 percent (8 of 14) from 3-point range. Georgetown also surrendered 31 assists, the most allowed in a game this season by a Big East team. The Hoyas' feeble defense actually has been a season-long issue and is one of the main contributors to their current 10-game losing streak. And with their record conference losing streak now at 29 games, Georgetown looks to solve its persistent defensive struggles. Since their last win on Dec. 7 vs. Siena, Georgetown allowed their opponent to shoot at least 50 percent in five games and has held their opponent to below 40 percent just once, in a 66-51 home loss to Seton Hall on Jan. 10. The Hoyas' 78.1 points allowed per game allowed ranks 342nd of 352 teams in the nation, and their 83.9 points allowed per game and 49.7 field-goal percentage allowed in conference play rank last in the league.

Rocked by four straight Southeastern Conference defeats, No. 25 Arkansas is at the crossroads as it prepares to host Ole Miss on Saturday afternoon in Fayetteville, Ark. The Razorbacks (12-6, 1-5 SEC) lost for the fifth time in six games Wednesday night, dropping a 79-76 road decision to Missouri. The Tigers used a 10-0 second-half run to outscore Arkansas down the stretch, 22-9. That included draining all eight free throws in the last half-minute. The setback was a tough one to stomach for coach Eric Musselman and his squad, which held a 10-point lead twice in the second half and seemed poised to sweep the season series from the Tigers. The loss likely will knock the Razorbacks off their precarious perch as the final team in the AP Top 25. With Texas A&M winning its seventh straight game Wednesday, the Aggies could be justified in supplanting Arkansas in the rankings as one of the nation's hottest squads. Of greater concern to Musselman, however, were the four players who fouled out and the Tigers shooting 40 free throws to his team's 26 -- making 23.

Starting with a 78-63 defeat at Villanova on Dec. 21, the Red Storm (13-6, 3-5 Big East) lost five straight, falling to Xavier, Seton Hall, Marquette and Providence. In the 83-80 setback to the Friars, St. John's rallied to tie twice in the second half after facing an eight-point deficit and coach Mike Anderson liked the energy. Anderson had plenty to enjoy in the subsequent two games, a 16-point home win over Butler on Jan. 10 and Sunday's 85-74 win against the Huskies in Hartford, Conn. On Sunday, the Red Storm outscored UConn 47-36 in the second half, shot 51.7 percent for the game, allowed 41.8 percent shooting and forced 21 turnovers. As usual, St. John's received a big game from NCAA double-doubles leader Joel Soriano, who collected 19 points and 13 rebounds for his 16th double-double.

Expect defense to be at the forefront and intensity to be elevated when No. 12 Iowa State hosts No. 7 Texas on Tuesday in a Big 12 Conference dustup in Ames, Iowa. The teams are tied for second place in conference play five games into the brutal Big 12 gauntlet. The Longhorns (15-2, 4-1 Big 12) head north after another gritty come-from-behind win, this one 72-70 at home against Texas Tech on Saturday. Texas has won three straight after getting walloped at home by Kansas State on Jan. 3, two of those when they were down by at least nine points at halftime. Marcus Carr led the Longhorns with 20 points and Sir'Jabari Rice added 18, including five free throws in the final 21 seconds to carry Texas to the finish line. Timmy Allen added 17 points for the Longhorns, who are 8-1 under interim coach Rodney Terry. Rice made pairs of free throws with 20.6 and 14 seconds remaining, respectively, and was fouled again with five seconds left and Texas up by two points. He went 1 of 2, keeping the margin at three points, but the Longhorns immediately fouled to eliminate the chance for a game-tying 3-pointer and were able to hold on. The second-half charge came after Terry got his team's attention with a halftime speech that served as a wake-up call. After the break, the Longhorns made 52 percent of their shots, 13 of their 15 free throws and allowed Texas Tech just eight points in the paint.

Then they had five days without a game but will be back in action on Tuesday night when they meet with Tulane in New Orleans. "We got a little break here, so hopefully we can get some bodies back, get healthy, heal the wounded, feed the sick and do all that stuff and move on to the next one," Houston coach Kelvin Sampson said. "This has been a tough stretch. ... We've got so many guys out." The Cougars (17-1, 5-0 American Athletic Conference) played without second-leading scorer Jarace Walker (10.4 points per game) and key reserve Ramon Walker Jr. (15.1 minutes per game) against South Florida because of a variety of ailments. Sampson is hoping the Cougars are at full strength or close to it against Tulane. Leading scorer Marcus Sasser led the way against the Bulls by scoring a career-high 31 points, and fellow guard Jamal Shead added 20. The Cougars allowed a season-high in points to USF and trailed 53-48 with 13:40 left before going on a 20-4 run to take control.

Washington State seeks to increase its winning streak to a season-best three games when it hosts struggling Stanford on Saturday night in Pacific-12 Conference action in Pullman, Wash. The Cougars (8-10, 3-4) recaptured their defensive magic from four days earlier when they shut down visiting Cal in the second half of a 66-51 victory Wednesday. Washington State's offense rebounded from a 3-for-10 effort on 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes and scorched the visitors in the second half with a 6-of-7 shooting stretch from long range, blowing open a game that had been just 31-30 in its favor at halftime. The Cougars were equally effective on defense in the second half, holding the Golden Bears without a 3-pointer in 11 attempts after Cal had connected on 5-of-9 in the first half. The most impressive part of the win, according to coach Kyle Smith, was that his team didn't overlook Cal after stunning then-No. 5 Arizona on the road last Saturday.

No. 4 Alabama has its sights set on winning the SEC championship, while LSU is just trying to find its way under first-year head coach Matt McMahon as it faces the Crimson Tide on Saturday afternoon in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Alabama (14-2, 4-0 SEC) faced its biggest conference test to date when it visited No. 15 Arkansas on Wednesday night and prevailed 84-69. "Tough road win," Alabama coach Nate Oats said. "Our guys showed that they've got some toughness, character and some grit. "Couldn't be more proud of them. Continue to get better every game. We've just got to keep getting a little bit better every game, staying in this hunt for the SEC championship." The victory was Alabama's third on the road against a ranked team, joining wins against No. 1 Houston and then-No. 21 Mississippi State.
