My predictive models project that there will be an 83% probability of a score in the first period. So, for a pizza-money sized bet (not more than 2 units) bet Yes on the first period score is a solid opportunity. This game could see early scoring and then settle down in a very physical match with both teams not willing to take risky chances to score goals. So, as another small bet opportunity if the total would hit 7 goals during the first period betting the Under looks like a solid opportunity. 

If the game is tied after the first the Oilers will be a pizza money bet using the +1.5 puck line knowing it has gone 19-2 for 91% and earning a 45% ROI averaging a –220 bet. This betopportunity becomes even better if the score is 0-0 after the first, which is not likley, but should it occur then getting the +1.5-puck line with the Oilers is quite attractive. 

Conner McDavid to win the Conn Smythe MVP Award prior to the start of Game 5 at +750 has turned out quite well. He is currently priced as a –3000 favorite to win the award no matter if the Oilers win the Cup or not. Aleksander Barkov is priced at +1400 to win the award and he would need a hat trick or 5 or more points earned to get the attention of the award voters. Still, for pizza money getting on board at +1400 for a pizza-money bet is a great hedge against the +750 bet we made on McDavid prior to Game 5. you are locking in a profit.  

Game 7’s in the Stanley Cup Finals is rarer than other pro sports and home teams are on a current 0-3 losing streak. In the 2008 season the Red Wings hosted the Penguins and lost 2-1; In the 2010 season the Canucks hosted the Bruins and lost 4-0, in the 2018 season the Bruins hosted the Blues and lost 4-1.  

In any game 7 in the NHL playoffs the team that has earned a lead of any size after the first period has gone on to a 37-11 record and is 2-0 in the Finals. Teams that had the lead after the first period and have been priced between a 125 favorite and underdog have gone 11-4 and earning a 53% ROI.

They have outshot their foes 35 to 23, averaging 1 power play goal while allowing 0.20, and averaged a 4.20 to 2 final score – despite a 4-5 loss to the Rangers at MSG. In their wins they have averaged a final score of 4.25 to 1.25, a margin of three goals.  

As a hedge against an upset loss (not that I obviously think that will happen) bet Connor McDavid to win the MVP despite being on the losing team. He is +750 currently to win the Conn Smythe Trophy and let’s say the Oilers lose by a goal tonight and he has a monster game, it is a real possibility that he could edge out Aleksander Barkov and Sergei Bobrovsky. Also, Edmonton is priced at +700 to hoist the Cup and if they would accomplish the rare feat after trailing 0-3 in the Finals, you are getting a better price betting on McDavid to win the MVP and he would most certainly be the winner if the Oilers pulled it off. Just a ‘What-If’ great value bet.
