If the return of Bo Peline isn’t enough to catch people’s attention, then maybe this game with Western Michigan will. Both teams finished with a 5-7 record last year, but unlike Nebraska, the Broncos had three losses in the final minute last season. The Huskers are favored by two touchdowns, but don’t be surprised if this game is close heading into the fourth quarter.
The Huskers return their best and baddest player in Marlon Lucky at running back. Lucky came to Nebraska as one of many heralded athletes recruited by former head coach Bill Callahan. Lucky admitted to not playing all-out in a couple games last season just as the rest of the Husker players did, but that philosophy won’t fly with Pelini. As much of a threat receiving as he is running, Lucky will be the cog in this offense and has to show leadership early in the season.
Also on the offensive side of the ball for Nebraska is standout wide receiver Niles Paul. There is plenty of inexperience at wide receiver behind senior Nate Swift and Todd Peterson, but Paul has reportedly shown great maturity from a season ago and figures to play a significant role in this offense. More importantly, Paul will be asked to give both the kickoff and punt return games a needed spark. A player to watch on the defensive side of the ball for the Huskers is senior linebacker Cody Glenn. He’s making his first career start, in fact his first career appearance on defense this season. He was a running back last year but switched positions in the spring. But the question is whether or not Glenn is starting because of the strong play he’s shown in practice, or because the defense is so woeful at linebacker?

For Western Michigan, a game at Memorial Stadium this weekend is a daunting task for any opponent, especially one from the Mid-American conference. But Nebraska in the here and now isn’t what Nebraska used to be in its heyday. Fellow MAC foe Ball State proved that a year ago by nearly upsetting the Cornhuskers 40-41 at this same Memorial Stadium, after blowing a nine-point lead with eight minutes to go.
A couple key players for you to watch on the Broncos roster are FS Louis Delmas, CB Londen Fryan and WR Jamarko Simmons. Delmas is a senior playmaker that lays the wood on foes play after play in the secondary. He can be a momentum-changer for Western Michigan. CB Londen Fryar is starting for a third straight season, in a group with Delmas, E.J. Biggers and C.J. Wilson, that is considered to be the strongest secondary in the MAC. This bodes well for the Broncos considering Nebraska is not shy about putting the ball in the air.
WR Jamarko Simmons is a senior that is one of the most difficult players in the MAC for defensive backs to cover. He plays in the slot, and he’s much more physical that most corners, while showing speed that will be too much for most linebackers to try and cover. Simmons caught 84 balls a year ago and figures to play a big role in trying to pick apart a weak Cornhuskers’ secondary Saturday.
