Much has changed for the Giants since their 17-14 upset of the previously unbeaten New England Patriots.  Most of the changes have come on the defensive side of the ball.  Five defensive starters who opened Super Bowl XLII will not wear a Giants’ uniform on Thursday.  Those will be ends Michael Strahand and Osi Umenyiora, who is now out for the season with an injury he suffered in the preseason.  Also linebackers Kawika Mitchell and Reggie Torbor have taken their acts elsewhere for more money.  Free safety Gabril Wilson is now with the Raiders in hopes of helping shore up their secondary.

Perhaps the biggest headline-grabbing offseason release for the G-Men came when tight end Jeremy Shockey was traded to the Saints.  Shockey had been embroiled in a public feud with team management in the offseason, and this is what the men upstairs felt would be best for the team.  Things have changed drastically in Washington as well.  Jim Zorn makes his debut as a head coach Thursday,  Zorn, the former Seattle Seahawks quarterback coach, was hired to succeed the retired Joe Gibbs back in February, just two weeks after Zorn was originally named the Redskins’ offensive coordinator.

Zorn started 100 games for the Seahawks in his playing days, and now he’ll inherit a Washington team that wend 9- and made its second playoff appearance in the last three years.  The Redskins managed to win their final four regular season games in 200, with backup QB Todd Collins who played brilliantly in the absence of Jason Campbell.  But Campbell will start for Washington on Thursday, with Collins again in the backup role.  The Giants will try to maintain the momentum they ended with last season as Super Bowl Champs.  In fact, Super Bowl champions from the previous season are a perfect 8-0 in week 1 the following year.  So the Giants do have that going for them.

The Giants own an 85-61-4 advantage in the all-time regular season series with Washington.  These teams split last season, with the road team winning each contest.  The last home win in this series for the G-Men came in 2006, when they swept the Redskins.  The teams have also split two postseason matchuups, with the Giants taking down a 1-0 victory in the 1986 NFC Championship.  Washington beat the Giants 28-0 way back in the 1943 NFC Division Playoff.  New York head coach Tom Coughlin is 6-5 against the Redskins all-time.  Zorn will obviously be facing the Giants and Coughlin for the first time as head coach.

The most interesting factor to watch in this game is when Washington has the ball.  The Redskins’ fortunes will rest heavily on whether Zorn’s west-coast-style offensive scheme takes control quickly.  Campbell had 2,700 passing yards with 12 TD’s and 11 INT’s in 200.  It will be his seventh offensive system in eight seasons, dating back to his time at Auburn.  He has three proven targets in Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle El and tight end Chris Cooley to make Campbell’s job much easier.  Clinton Portis will continue to carry the load after rushing for 1,262 yards and 11 touchdowns.  Portis is also a proven outlet out of the backfield by snagging 47 receptions last year.  He’ll be asked to produce as much, if not more, than he did last season.
