Peyton Manning has set many records, won multiple MVP trophy’s, and has had as much regular season success as any quarterback in the league the last five years. However, his lack of post-season success has definitely put a blemish on his career while giving the Colts a reputation as underachievers. Sunday he will get another chance to shake all of the critics against the Colts’ nemesis in the New England Patriots.

The Colts (14-4) host the New England Patriots (14-4) in the AFC Championship Sunday. The Colts have won the last two games in the regular season between these squads including a 27-20 triumph at New England. But when it comes to the playoffs, New England has their number. The Pats rolled over the Colts in 2004 by a score of 24-14 on their way to a Super Bowl victory. The next season they handed Peyton Manning and Indianapolis a 20-3 trouncing in the Divisional round of the playoffs en route to their third Super Bowl victory in four seasons. This game has tremendous history behind it and will be the most anticipated AFC Championship round in many years.

The Colts’ defense has come out of nowhere in the playoffs, holding Kansas City and Baltimore to an average of 63 rushing yards per game to silence the critics. The return of Bob Sanders has proven that he is one of the best run-stoppers in the league. If the Colts have any chance of winning this game they will need an identical performance from the last two weeks to shut down Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
Peyton Manning has been sub-par at best over the last two weeks at best, but the Colts have still found a way to win. This has to be a big confidence booster as a team to know that they can win without Manning at the top of his game. Unfortunately, if he is not playing at a high level against the Pats then Indianapolis will be going down in flames because Bill Belichick is the best coach in the league and he will capitalize on all Manning mistakes.
The Patriots just need to keep doing what they have been every year in the playoffs; just find a way to win. Coach Bill Belichick is the best schemer in the league and he will exploit every weakness in the Colts’ defense. Their combination of the run and pass is second to none because they always keep teams guessing. Behind veteran Corey Dillon and rookie Lawrence Moroney, the Patriots have one of the best 1-2 punches in the league. Dillon will hit defenders in the mouth while Moroney will slash and run away from them. There’s not much more you can say about Tom Brady that hasn’t already been said. The guy is just a winner and finds a way to get it done in the clutch when nobody else can. If they can limit the Colts to field goals behind veteran Tedy Bruschi and their stingy defense then they will give themselves a great chance to win. The Pats better pray that the game doesn’t come down to the kicker they let go in Adam Vinatieri because that story will end in a Colts’ victory.
