This week the Jacksonville Jaguars head to Gillette Stadium to take on the undefeated New England Patriots, hoping to finally put a blemish on that 16-0 record of theirs.  It’s going to be tough and it’s going to be tough for Jags backers to get an easy win with the Pats coming into this game at 10-6 ATS and 5-3 ATS on their home field.

The Patriots are the best offensive team in the NFL as they put up 36.8 ppg and racked up 411.3 ypg.  They set an NFL-record in 2007 by scoring 589 points and they also broke the previous record for touchdowns with 75.

It wasn’t just league team records that came tumbling down this year, but individual ones as well.  Tom Brady passed for 50 touchdowns to break Peyton Manning’s record of 49.  Randy Moss caught 23 of those touchdowns to break Jerry Rice’s record of 22.

If you focus entirely on the New England offense though you might just not know how great their defense is as well.  The Pats were fourth in the NFL this year and gave up just 17.1 ppg and 288.3 ypg.

However, don’t just look at how great New England was this year and figure you are going to pull the trigger on them in their first playoff game.  The Pats have lost their backers money in five of their last six games.

Jacksonville came through in the opening round of the playoffs to earn their way to New England.  The Jaguars went into Pittsburgh and beat the Steelers 31-29 on a field goal with under a minute remaining in the game.  It was the first time in 75 years that a team had gone into Pittsburgh and beat the Steelers twice in the same season.

The Jags are hot, winning seven of their last nine games both SU and ATS.  The offense is doing a good job of putting up points and protecting the football, while the defense has caused problems for opposing offenses.

This should be a solid matchup between two teams that haven’t met since Week 16 of last season, when New England went to Jacksonville and came away with a 24-21 victory.  New England has been a solid team at the pay window against Jacksonville, winning the money in five of the last six meetings between the teams.

New England knows that the 16-0 season will be all for not if they can’t win three more in a row to give them their fourth Super Bowl under the Brady era.  This game gets underway at 8 PM EST.
