This game features an interesting coaching match-up between UNC’s Butch Davis and Greg Schiano of Rutgers. Schiano was actually Davis’ defensive coordinator for two season at Miami in 1999 and 2000. He left Miami for Rutgers, while Davis bolted for the Cleveland Browns in the NFL. The two meet up Thursday in what will be a great strategic battle between two of the better coaches college football has to offer.
North Carolina is coming off a 35-27 win over McNeese State. A few players to watch for the Tar Heels include WR Hakeem Hicks, WR Brandon Tate, DE E.J. Wilson and DE Darrius Massenburg. The wide receiver position is definitely a team strength this season. Tate had a big day in the opening win over McNeese. He rushed three times for 106 yards and caught three passes for 93 yards to show his versatility and explosiveness. He also returned three punts for 142 yards, including an 82-yard return for a touchdown. Not to mention, he ran back a kickoff for 56 yards. Tate is the biggest playmaker you will see for the Tar Heels Thursday.
Nicks is on schedule to become the team’s all-time leading receiver before the season ends. He got the season started off with seven catches for 110 yards. A 71-yarder set up a Carolina touchdown in week 1. End E.J. Wilson stepped up for the departed Hilee Taylor and had three tackles for a loss, and eight tackles in all. He was the ACC’s co-Defensive Player of the Week for his performance. On the opposite side of Wilson was end Darrius Massenburg. But he had to have arthroscopic knee surgery and won’t play against Rutgers. His status will be updated weekly, while sophomore backup Greg Elleby has to fill his shoes in the meantime. Schiano and the Scarlet Knights will be looking for a much-needed home victory over the Tar Heels after losing 24-7 to Fresno State in their opener. Players to watch for Rutgers include LT Anthony Davis, PK San San Te and RB Mason Robinson. Davis will match up against fellow sophomore Marvin Austin on Thursday. The two have squared off before at high school All-America events, but this time the battle is for real. Davis will need to keep Austin out of the Knights’ backfield for his team to succeed.
Schiano was nothing but confident that his kicker would rebound from an 0-for-2 performance in his first game replacing Jeremy Ito as the starter. One of those misses came on a bad snap against Rfresno State. But that confidence might go away quickly if he fails to put the ball through the uprights with more consistency this week. It was a nightmare opener for sophomore running back Mason Robinson. He entered August hoping to be the primary option in the backfield and returning punts. Instead, Robinson recorded just 12 yards rushing on six carries against Fresno. He also muffed two punts before being replaced by Dennis Campbell. Robinson will be looking for improvement in both areas to give Rutgers a chance against North Carolina. The best spread for the Scarlet Knights is Rutgers -5 at BetUs Sportsbook!
