Reasons why Phoenix covers the spread Tuesday:

1.)  The Hawks are playing their worst ball of the season right now, and it’s largely due to the fact that F Al Horford has been watching from the sidelines.  Losers of four of their last five games, the Hawks kick off a brief road trip on Tuesday night as they visit the Phoenix Suns.  Atlanta’s one 2009 victory was a January 3 showdown against the Houston Rockets, but it has since dropped three straight. The defensive prowess that had carried the Hawks for most of the first two months of the season suddenly evaporated. After giving up just 94.8 points per contest through their first 32 games, they are surrendering 109.0 over their last four.  The low point was Friday’s 121-87 defeat at the hands of the Southeast Division rival Orlando Magic, as they fell behind by 38 by the half.  Atlanta is clearly not the same team without young stud Horford in the lineup.  Now they have to try and contend with the Phoenix Suns who have two big men inside that won’t be stopped.  With the Hawks thin in the middle, Shaq and Amare Staudemire will have field days tonight.

2.)  The Suns, meanwhile, have won five of six. After a 28-point blowout over Western Conference rival Dallas on Friday, they followed that up with a 109-103 win over the Clippers two nights later. Shaquille O’Neal scored 26 points to lead the way, while Jason Richardson and Grant Hill added 21 apiece.  Phoenix is  9-2 SU & 8-3 ATS in their last 11 home games vs. Atlanta.  The last time the Hawks traveled to Phoenix it got ugly in a hurry as the Suns cruised to a 125-92 victory over Atlanta. 

3.)  System Play.  We’ll Play On – Home teams (PHOENIX) – excellent shooting team (>=47.5%) against an average defensive team (43.5-45.5%), in a game involving two average rebounding teams (+/-3 reb/game).  This is a 47-20 ATS System hitting 70.1% over the last 5 seasons.  The Suns are shooting 50.2% from the floor at home, while Atlanta shoots just 43.4% on the road.  That’s nearly 7 percentage points higher than the Hawks.  With Horford out, the Hawks won’t be able to stop the Suns’ big men and thus this will become another blowout similar to the 33-point blowout Phoenix put on Atlanta the last times these teams met up in Arizona.  Bet the Suns at home.
