De La Hoya Mayweather Predictions
June 10, 2008
Floyd Mayweather Jr. will have his father in his corner for the upcoming fight with Oscar De La Hoya in a surprising turn of events. Floyd Mayweather Sr. made up with his son and left De La Hoya’s corner after De La Hoya refused to pay his long time corner man a flat $2 million for the fight. De La Hoya offered him $500,000 up front and another $500,000 for a win. Perhaps this is an indication of both De La Hoya and Mayweather Sr.’s level of confidence against the 37-0 Mayweather Jr. $2 million should have been small potatoes considering that De La Hoya is expected to make $25 million on the fight which dwarfs Mayweather Jr.’s expected earnings of $10 million.
This strange turn of events perhaps reveals De La Hoya’s increasingly business oriented boxing lending to the notion that he’s in it just for the cash. I still side with those that think De La Hoya is a force every time he steps in the ring. His falling out with Mayweather Sr. likely gives him more motivation to come out on top.
Both boxers have knockout potential. De La Hoya probably has even more than Mayweather with 30 of his 38 wins coming by knockout while Mayweather has won by knockout in 24 of his 37 victories. Both of these boxers are smart and they know the significance of this fight in terms of how it ranks among the all-time great bouts. We shouldn’t really expect the heavy hitting to pick up until the later rounds as both champs will try to avoid getting caught. De La Hoya is still in good shape, but he knows he’s not as young as he once was and he’ll box a much more technically sound match than you might have seen in his early days.
My lean is on Mayweather by decision, but it’s not as strong of a lean as I would like. The one bet I think we can cash in on though is the over 11.5 rounds bet. I don’t see any knockouts in the forecast in this fight between two very crafty veterans. We’ve got this one chalked up to go the distance. You can currently make the over bet on the total rounds at Bodog. I think you’ll find this bet comes through for you.
