2008 Buick Open Odds & Preview
June 24, 2008
With the US Open a couple weeks behind the players, many of golfs big names will be back in action this weekend when they head to Warwick Hills for the 2008 Buick Open. The tournament first started in 1958, but because of events being dropped from the PGA Tour it took a break starting in 1969, and didn’t again play till 1977. This event is one that many golfers love to play in because of its easy scoring and many more are going to like it now that Tiger Woods will miss the tournament after announcing he was done for the year. With the conditions playing so easy, golfers are forced to continue to try and put birdie after birdie up in order to stay in contention. Last year Brian Bateman won the tournament by just 1 shot over 3 players with a 15 under performance. With that said lets take a look at some of the favorites, guys in the middle of the pack, and some long shots who we think have a chance to win this weekend.
Favorites:
Jim Furyk 10/1, Kenny Perry 12/1, Justin Leonard 15/1, and Heath Slocum 22/1
There is plenty to like in this group, as all 3 not only seem to play well here year in and year out, each have won this event at one point in their career. Furyk was the last to win it in 2003, and has been the most consistent out of anyone in the field this weekend when it comes to playing well at Warwick Hills.
Middle of the Pack:
Brant Snedeker, 25/1, Scott Verplank, 25/1, Briny Baird 30/1, Tom Pernice Jr 30/1, and Nick O’Hern 30/1
This group is full of talent as Snedeker continues to impress fans with his great performances at the majors this year. Verplank and Baird faired well here a year ago, plus Verplank won this thing all the way back in 1988. The guy that you really want to keep your eye on is Pernice Jr, as he has not only won this event back in 1999, he has been in the top 10 as well including his most recent 7th place finish here in 2006.
Long Shots:
Woody Austin 40/1, Lucas Glover, 40/1, Rocco Mediate 50/1, Billy Mayfair 100/1, and Brian Bateman 150/1
If you had to guess how many total wins this group had at this event, I would bet you wouldn’t of said 4, but thats how many they have won. In fact it all started in 1998 with Mayfiar, followed by Pernice Jr in 1999, and finished up by Rocco in 2000. The reason we got a Bateman up here is he the defending champion, and you got to give the guy props for that.
