Recap Southern Cal experienced a mediocre year in 2010-11 having a 19-15 record and also a fourth place finish inside the Pac-10 conference. In the Pac-10 tourney Southern Cal made it towards the semifinals, then proceeded to go down in the play-in game of the NCAA tournament to Virginia Commonwealth. Southern Cal had results by becoming an excellent defensive group. USC held their foes to 40.9% from the floor shooting and also to less than 64 points per contest. The loss of Nikola Vucevic and Alex Stepheson will be tricky to replace. Vucevic averaged more than 17 points every game and brought down more than 10 rebounds each game. Stepheson was the group’s second best rebounder at 7.2 per night and also contributed just under 10 points. 2011-12 Overview Kevin O’Neill has been the Trojan head coach for a couple of years and has supplied the enthusiasts teams that play hard and get better as the year goes on. This season’s team has a lot of contributions to replace, but O’Neill does have Jio Fontan, Maurice Jones, and Garrett Jackson all back. As well as a solid fresman class the Trojans brought in transfers Aaron Fuller and Dewayne Dedmon. Backcourt USC will be heavily depending on their backcourt starters of Fontan and Jones. Fontan sat out the first semester last year, but returned to pace the team in assists and finished second in scoring at 10.5 points every night. Jones was 3rd on the Trojans in scoring with 9.9 points every game,...
Jamie Dixon and his Pittsburgh basketball team had an incredibly prosperous regular season in 2010-11. Despite playing a challenging conference schedule the team ended up having a 15-3 record in conference play. They defeated Connecticut handily in the final regular season meeting, but lost to the Huskies by a couple of points in the conference tournament. Pitt didn’t have much success in the NCAA tourney either, losing in the second round to Butler. This season’s version of the Pitt basketball team will have only two starters back. Still, coach Dixon has created a winning tradition and the program has shown to be able to reload when losing top talent. Backcourt Pitt’s guard play centers around Asthon Gibbs. Gibbs opted out of entering his name in the NBA draft, but pulled out due to the uncertain labor situation. Last year he put up almost 17 points per game on 49% 3-point shooting. Taking the place of Brandon Wanamaker will be Travon Woodall. Woodall is a good defender who is going to have to live up to the hype of being a decent passer. Also seeing time will be Cameron Wright, Durand Johnson, and John Johnson. Frontcourt Pittsburgh’s main losses occured from the front court that will be without Gilbert Brown and Gary McGhee. On the other hand, the Panthers do get some reliable players returning to go in addition to some exciting recruits. Nasir Robinson will provide the experience to the floor. Last year he averaged 9.4 points and almost 5 rebounds per...
2010 Review Not much was expected out of Iowa State last year. Almost every person figured they could be last within the Big 12 conference with just two players back from the 2009-10 season, but the Cyclones ended up being sort of a surprise. Generally, it can be difficult for folks to be energized about a .500 season, but it was the first time Iowa State didn’t have a losing record since the 2005-6 campaign. In Fred Hoiberg’s very first season, Iowa State completely adjusted their identity. Moving from a slow it down and grind it out group to one that ran far more and spread the floor. That transformation of pace helped the Cyclones rank fifth in the conference and 39th in the country in offense at 74.8 points each contest. Iowa State also shot the three-ball particularly effectively last year, hitting 275 (8.6 every game) of their shots from beyond the line. That was plenty to lead the conference and rank 13th within the nation. 2011-12 Preview Only two starters return for Iowa State this season, however the real key may be the addition of four transfers. Last year this group was named the top scout team around the nation and helped keep every practice competitive. Now Chris Allen, Chris Babb, Royce White, and Anthony Booker will probably be ready to prove themselves on the floor. Last year Iowa State wasn’t extremely deep, so they performed a far more conservative half-court defense. With extra talent on this year’s roster you can bet they will likely...
