2008 Wyoming Football

Head Coach Joe Glenn tries to get the Wyoming Cowboys on the winning track in his 6th season as head coach of the school.  Ending their 2007 campaign with six losses in their final seven games should have the 15 returning starters hungry to make amends this season.  Let’s see how Glenn’s squad fares as the team at Info Plays gives their 2008 Wyoming Cowboys football predictions and season preview below.

Offense:

Joe Glenn dropped his 7-year affiliation with last year’s offensive coordinator Bill Cockhill after the Cowboys collapsed offensively down the stretch.  In comes Bob Cole to take over the offensive coordinator job to try and help this unit cut down on turnovers, (31 Turnovers last year).  Cole’s emphasis will be getting a strong running games and simplifying the playbook for his quarterbacks.  The senior running back tandem of Devin Moore and Wynel Seldon combined for 1,519 yards and 13 touchdowns last year.

There’s no deep threat emerging at wide receiver, but that’s ok because the deep passing game has been thrown aside for quicker throws and shorter routes that the team hopes will lead to fewer interceptions.  Quarterback Karsten Sween had to fight for his job in the spring after struggling last year.  Glenn didn’t name the starter after spring ball though.  He brought in junior college transfer Dax Crum, who was originally signed by Arizona State.  Senior Ian Hetrick is also in the mix.  Glenn and cole will be happy with the one who best manages the running game and avoids mistakes throwing the ball.

Defense:

Wyoming has some studs up front, but freshman inside linebacker Gabe Knapton could be the best player on this defense by the time he leaves Laramie.  The 6-3, 227-pound force redshirted last year, but easily won the starting job in the spring.  The top upperclassman goes to John Fletcher, a 6-6, 280-pound defensive tackle that was names to the Outland Trophy watch list after recording 10.5 sacks last year, 11th in the nation.

Another big presence in the preferred 3-4 front is end Mitch Unrein.  Senior linebacker Ward dobbs will take over the senior leadership role of the defense.  Half the secondary will be new with cornerbacks Marcell Gipson and T.J. Atwater teaming with senior veterans Quincy Rogers and Michael Ray as the safeties.

Wyoming Football Predictions at Info Plays5th in the Mountain West

If the Cowboys can clean up the turnovers, they will have a chance to be successful.  It’s a transition year for the offense with a running-dominated game plan in store.  But the defense will have a chance to carry the team with 5 seniors and 4 juniors returning as starters.  Wyoming should be able to finish in the Top 5 of the MWC if everything goes as planned.
