2008 NASCAR Sucono Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 Odds

July 29, 2008 | Posted By Larry Cook

We are close to the end of yet another exciting NASCAR Sprint Cup season, and this weekend we get ready for the 2008 Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway. This will be the second race of the season at Pocono. Kasey Kahne won the earlier event here at the Pocono 500 back in the beginning of June. While every race is important, there are only so many weeks left before the top 12 cut is made and 2008 Chase for the Sprint Cup begins. Last year Kurt Busch was able to take the checkered flag, and it will be his race to defend. With only 2 points separating 12 and 13th place, professional handicapper Jason Lowry is going to breakdown this weekends race by the favorites, guys in the middle of the pack, and the longs shots who have a chance to win this weekend.

Favorites: Kasey Kahne +500, Denny Hamlin +600, Kyle Busch +600, Jimmie Johnson +600, and Carl Edwards +700
There is a reason that these drivers receive the odds they do week in and week out, its because they are some of the most consistent drivers you will find. Kahne might not always get these kinds of odds, but thanks to his great performance here earlier in the year he is the favorite going into the race. Jimmie Johnson was your winner last week at the Brickyard 400, but that race was so messed up because of the tires its hard to judge anything off of it. Kyle Busch is the one dominating the point standings and will get another shot at adding Pocono to his list of Sprint Cup victories. If we were to pick one driver to win this weekend, it would be Kyle Busch.

Middle of the Pack: Dale Earnhard Jr +1200, Tony Stewart + 1200, Jeff Gordon +1200, Greg Biffle +1500, Matt Kenseth +1500
This is quite the group right here as you get 3 of the most popular and respected drivers in NASCAR, but Gordon is the only one to have won on this track, and he hasn’t done so since the late 90’s. Earnhardt Jr and Kenseth both found themselves in the top 10 at the Pocono 500, which is a good sign for this weekend. Kenseth and Stewart are both right on the edge of the top 12, but will need solid races to remain in it. The guy we like out of this group is Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Long Shots: Brian Vickers +2500, Kevin Harvick +2500, Jeff Burton +3000, Kurt Busch +4000, Ryan Newman +4000, David Ragan +4000, and Clint Bowyer +5000
At least everyone of these drivers have won at this track before, or are in desperate need of a solid finish to get into or stay in the top 12. Busch doesn’t seem to have a shot at the top 12, but has won this race 2 out of the last 3 years. Guys like Vickers, Newman, Harvick, Bowyer, and Ragan are all bunched together at 12-16 and each race is so important for these drivers. Its likely only a couple will make it, and a big finish this weekend could go a long way in doing so. Our pick goes with Vickers, but watch out for Burton and Bowyer.
