The New England Patriots will lose
This team relies a little too much on the pass and can’t run the ball effectively even with Laurence Maroney. While that has worked all season long, when it’s cold and snowy up in New England this January and smash mouth teams like Jacksonville or Pittsburgh visit, then a game against either San Diego or Indianapolis who can also run the ball effectively, there is going to be an upset in the making.
Boston owns Professional Sports
It seems like Beantown is becoming the new sports mecca of the world, and at least in 2008 it could appear so. With the Patriots having a solid chance at winning the NFL title, unless you agree with my first prediction, the Celtics posting a great record in the first third of the season, and the Red Sox being the favorite to win this year’s title, there isn’t a better city to be a sports fan right now.
The Red Sox own the Yankees
My how the mighty have fallen. It seems just a few short years ago that the Evil Empire beat up on Boston no matter what they did. Now the Red Sox have won two World Series titles in the last four years and will be working on another one this year. The Yankees on the other hand may have kept Alex Rodriguez, but were hit hard publicly by the Mitchell Report and have an aging roster that lacks the pitching needed to make a serious run.
Tiger Woods
The best golfer in the world has a great chance to make 2008 his best year ever. He always plays well at Augusta which makes him a threat to win the Masters, then he gets Torrey Pines for the US Open, where he has won five PGA events already. If he starts the year by sweeping those two events there will be plenty of Grand Slam talk, which will hurt the other players more than it will distract Tiger.
Roger Federer
Tennis’s top male player will continue to dominate in 2008, winning at least two titles. There are few players in the world that are even close to this guy’s league, and that isn’t going to change with the upcoming season.
Kobe Bryant
This guy will have done a complete 180 from last spring when he demanded a trade from the Lakers. Not only will the Lakers make the playoffs, but they will get there as a five seed and get a first round matchup they have a chance at winning. He’ll will them into the second round, and will pick up an MVP trophy in the process. It may be his first, but it won’t be his last.
Memphis goes unbeaten in the regular season
They have beaten three ranked opponents this season and are coming off a beat down of Arizona. Conference USA doesn’t have enough talent to knock off the Tigers, so it’s going to hold down a no. 1 seed in the tournament and have the Sweet 16 all but locked up. Then when the going gets tough we’ll see how good this team really can be.
