The 134th running of the Kentucky Derby is just around the corner. I will help you make your 2008 Kentucky Derby predictions before the race runs on Saturday, May 3rd at 6:00 P.M. The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the Triple Crown which also features the Belmont Stakes and the Preakness Stakes soon to follow. The Kentucky Derby stakes features three-year-old thoroughbred horses staged yearly in Louisville, Kentucky. The race covers one and one-quarter at the racetrack Churchill Downs. Colts and geldings are in at 126 lbs. while fillies are listed at 121 lbs.

The 2008 Kentucky Derby will be known as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” as a very fitting slogan for the approximate time the race will be ran. Street Sense won last year’s Kentucky Derby with a final time of 2:02:17 in 2007. Typically the approximate attendance is around 155,000 fans, making this one of the biggest sporting events in the country. Some fans are allowed to even sit on the infield, where they will be having picnics and eating fried chicken while they toss around Frisbees. It makes for one of the most prestigious occasions and millions of people from around the country will be watching the fastest two minutes in sports on Saturday, May 3rd.

The best way to go about making your 2008 Kentucky Derby predictions is by taking a look at the field and checking out their past performances. Kentucky Derby odds are now posted and I will give you a look at my contenders and predictions in this article. Legal gambling on this race will be done on the Churchill Downs track, at various horse racing tracks around the country and at online horse racebooks such as Superbook. It will be critical to get your wagers in early to get the best odds available on the thoroughbred horses of your choice.

Let’s take a look at a few horses worth your wagering with my 2008 Kentucky Derby Predictions below:

1.) Big Brown at 3/1 Odds to win the 2008 Kentucky Derby

Big Brown’s success in 3 career starts cannot be ignored. Big Brown has won all 3 races he has entered including a Florida Derby victory from the No. 12 post. This son of Boundary automatically has some credentials in his breeding history. His 1:48 for the 1 1/8 miles was the fastest since ‘96 and only a fraction of a second off Gufstream’s track reacord. Just recently Big Brown worked a 1:00 3/5 on the dirt track at Palm Meadow’s training center, a very fast run. Big Brown has what it takes at 3/1 odds to overcome the decades-old curse that shows no horse has won the Derby with only 4 career starts.

2.) Gayego at 20/1 Odds to win the 2008 Kentucky Derby

This is the best value horse in the field in my opinion. Gayego made his debut on the dirt by winning the Arkansas Derby with a four-length triumph. He is the son of Gilded Time and covered the 1 1/8 miles at Oaklawn Park in 1:49 3/5. This mark was two ticks faster than ‘07 Horse of the Year Curlin when he posted a record 10 ½ length victory. This pony has posted 3 wins and 2 seconds in 5 career starts. Gayego has all the tools for a win at the famous dirt track in Churchill Downs.

Take a look at these two horses as you make your 2008 Kentucky Derby predictions. The more you look at them the more I think you will want to place a nice-sized wager down. Obviously Gayego is a better value bet, but Big Brown’s credentials with his versatility and speed can’t be ignored. The chances are one of these two horses will take down the 2008 Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 3rd.
