2008 John Deere Classic Preview & Odds

July 7, 2008 | Posted By Larry Cook

This weekend the PGA Tour makes its final stop before the British Open gets underway, and the 2008 John Deere Classic is the stop many players will make as their way to get ready for the Open. Professional handicapper Jason Lowry is going to breakdown this upcoming event that is scheduled to get underway on Thursday at TPC at Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. While some of the big names are over on the European Tour, there are plenty of guys with a shot to win this tournament. Many of golfers lessor known players shine in weeks leading up to a major, just like last year when Jonathan Byrd won, or in 2006 when John Senden took home the trophy. The last real big name to win this event is Vijay Singh back in 2003, and he’s not in the field this weekend. So with many golfers having a shot, lets break up how the odds makers see it by the favorites, guys in the middle, and some long shots we think have a shot at winning this week.

Favorites: Kenny Perry 7/1, Aaron Baddeley 20/1, Heath Slocum 22/1, Tim Clark 25/1, Pat Perez 25/1 and Carl Pettersson 25/1
While we don’t usually consider guys with odds of 20/1 or worse as favorites, but due to their being so few big name players we extended that list to odds of 25/1 this week. It is easy to see who the odds makers really think is the best player in the field this weekend, as Perry is the only player with odds better than 20/1. We are big on the games of Baddeley, Perez, and Pettersson, but if you want the guy who is going to win this tournament, you want Kenny Perry.

Middle of the Pack: DJ Trahan 28/1, Bubba Watson 28/1, Tommy Armour III 33/1, Woody Austin 33/1, Jonathan Byrd 33/1, John Senden 33/1, Zach Johnson 33/1, and Sean O’Hair 33/1
There were more guys that had odds of 33/1, but we decided to make the cut off by taking out the guys we didn’t feel had a shot to win this weekend. This group has plenty of talent as the past 3 winners in Byrd, Senden, and O’Hair are all in the middle of things this weekend. Other guys we think you want to keep your eyes on are Trahan, Watson, and Armour III.

Long Shots: Kevin Sutherland 40/1, Nick Watney 40/1 Tom Lehman 40/1, Nathan Green 40/1, Peter Lonard 50/1, J.B. Holmes 50/1, and Billy Mayfair 66/1
While you won’t find any past winners in this group, you will find a few veterans, some guys that have played well on this course in years past, and a few guys that are on their way to winning tournaments. If you want just one guy out of this group, take the young Watney to make a surprise finish this weekend.
