2008 Centurion Boats at the Glenn Odds & Preview

August 6, 2008 | Posted By Larry Cook

We continue to wind down to the end of another explosive season of NASCAR Sprint Cup racing and last week Kyle Busch gave some of the competitors a chance to climb their way back into the mix of things, as Busch came in 36th at the Brickyard 400. The guy that took advantage of that the most was Carl Edwards, as he raced his way to the checkered flag last week. Edwards now only sits 185 points behind the leader Busch and just 9 points behind Dale Earnhardt Jr for second place. This week the drivers are heading to the big apple for the 2008 Centurion Boats at the Glenn, which just so happens to be the second and final road race of the season. With so many drivers still battling for position it should lead of for a very interesting race, as some drivers just have a feel for the road courses. To help you get a good idea of what the field looks like this week professional handicapper Jason Lowry is set to take a look at the odds for the favorites, guys in the middle of the pack, and the long shots who we think have a great chance of winning this weekend at the Watkins Glen International race venue.

Favorites:  Jeff Gordon +450, Tony Stewart +450,Juan Pablo Montoya +800, Kyle Busch +800, and Robby Gordon +1000

This just goes to to show just how much a difference a road course can make. Guys like Montoya and Robby Gordon are never found with these kind of odds, but when its time to race on the non conventional road courses, these guys are as good as it gets. There are still stars like Jeff Gordon and Stewart who have the ability to win on pretty much anything, and Busch showed everyone he could do that as well when he won the Toyota/Save Mart 350 earlier this season. The guy to beat here is definitely Stewart, as he has won this race 4 times in the past 6 years.

Middle of the Pack: Carl Edwards +1500, Denny Hamlin +1500, Marcos Ambrose +1500, Kevin Harvick +1500, Jimmie Johnson +1500, Kurt Busch +2000, and Ron Fellows +2500
Finding a guy in this group just might be the way to go, but doing it might not be so easy. A couple guys to keep your eyes on are always guys like Edwards, Hamlin, and Johnson, but don’t forget about Harvick, as he took the checkered flag here back in 2006. Its hard to say just who is going to have a strong finish this week out of this group, but if you want our opinion go with the hot driver of Carl Edwards, as he did pretty well in the first road race of the season finishing 9th.

Long Shots: Patrick Carpentier +3000, Jamie McMurray +3000, Dale Earnhardt Jr +3500, Jeff Burton +4000, Ryan Newman +4000, Clint Bowyer +5000, and Kasey Kahne +7500
This group a guys really don’t have much of a chance, as they get these kind of odds for a reason, but there are a couple guys in this group we think you should keep your eye on. Earnhardt Jr showed well at the first road race this season, and could come back strong for this one. Other guys we like are McMurray and Newman, as we feel they might be able to pull off the big win this weekend if everything falls into place.
