2008 British Open Preview & Odds
In just two weeks golfs best will be heading across seas for the oldest major championship in golf, as we get ready to take a look at the 2008 British Open at Royal Birkdale Golf Club. Last year Padraig Harrington took home the win at Carnoustie Golf Links, and in order for him to defend he will have to master yet another difficult course, as the British Open is played on nine different courses. The last player to win at Birkdale was Mark O’Meara all the way back in 1998, as he wont the tournament with a 72 hole score of even. With no Tiger Woods in the field this weekend its pretty much anyones game, and it will be fun to watch which players take advantage and make a run at one of golfs most historic events. To get a good idea of how the odds makers are seeing this tournament play out, Jason Lowry is going to break down the field into the favorites, guys in the middle of the pack, and the long shots. Because there are so many players playing this weekend we will shorten up the middle of the pack and the long shots to players we think have a legit shot at winning the 2008 British Open.
Favorites:
Sergio Garcia 8/1, Phil Mickelson 12/1, Ernie Els 12/1, Padraig Harrington 15/1, and Lee Westwood 15/1
It really says a lot to how Garcia has been playing of late to put him as the favorite to win this weekend, but he did have it all but won last season until he shot a +2 on the final day to end up in a playoff with Harrington, which he went on to lose by 1. Harringon and Els are the only two in this group that have won the British Open. Westwood seems to always play well in this tournament, and his best finish came back in 2004 where he finished 4th. Mickelson wants to win this thing bad, but just hasn’t performed well here at all, as he has only finished in the top 10 once back in 2004.
Middle of the Back:
Anthony Kim 20/1, Jim Furyk 20/1, Justin Rose 20/1, Retief Goosen 20/1, Adam Scott, 25/1, Vijay Singh 25/1, and Luke Donald 30/1
While its been almost 10 years since many of the players in the field have played at Birkdale, two guys did pretty well here back in 98 in Furyk and Rose who both tied for 5th. Kim is one of the hottest young golfers on tour and it could be his time to shine this weekend. While many are waiting for Scott to have his breakout party and finally capture a major championship, guys like Goosen and Singh are out there trying to add another to their trophy cases.
Long Shots:
Trevor Immelman 40/1, Justin Leonard 40/1. Andres Romero 40/1, Hunter Mahan 45/1, Steve Stricker 50/1, KJ Choi 60/1, Zach Johnson 80/1, and Ben Curtis 100/1
Here is where things get interesting, as anyone of these guys can have the weekend it takes to win this thing. Leonard and Curtis have both won this event before, and you can’t count out the past two Masters champions in Immelman and Johnson. Choi, Mahan, Stricker, and Romero all are coming off a top 10 performance at the Open last year, and could wind up winning the whole thing this year.
