2008 Baseball Betting Busts

The end of June is fast approaching, but there is still plenty of baseball left to be played and more chances to bet on baseball.  However, we thought now might be a good time to look at some of the biggest disappointments from the early season.

Seattle Mariners -  Last year the team did better than expected and then they went out and got Eric Bedard to pair up with Felix Hernandez.  This gave the Mariners a tough one-two combo at the top of their rotation and the city of Seattle had some hope for a return to the top of the AL West.  However, this team is second to last in ERA and is dead last in runs scored.  What once was hope has turned to despair as this is the worst team in baseball.  They seem to find a different way to lose every not, and we haven’t seen any signs of things getting turned around.  John McLaren was fired a few days ago, and it’s hard to keep a straight face when saying you didn’t see that coming.  However, the change of skippers isn’t going to help this sinking ship.

Cleveland Indians -This is a team that has problems across the board, but you can concentrate on the offense being lackluster from the start.  The lineup has seemed to get it turned around lately though, and the Indians are 6th in the AL in scoring.  The pitching is in decent shape if they can get Fausto Carmona healthy.  CC Sabathia had a rough April, but has bounced back strong.  Cliff Lee was spectacular to start the season and hasn’t tailed off too much.  This is a team that we felt would be a whole lot better than they currently are, but a second half run is possible.

Detroit Tigers – This pitching staff is crippling the team as they have the 3rd worst ERA in the American League.  The lineup has produced with the team ranking third in the AL in runs scored.   The team has shone a ray of light by putting up a lot of runs over the past week, plus they will get a boost in the coming weeks with the return of  Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya.  Justin Verlander pitched well in his last start, so if that was a trend of a return to form then this team could bounce back.

Atlanta Braves – Injuries have taken a toll on Atlanta as it seems like the only thing that can stop Chipper Jones from getting on base is himself and the pitching staff is trying to make due without John Smoltz.  We don’t see the Braves getting this turned around unless the injury bug leaves soon.
