2008 ACC Football Betting

If you are taking a look at the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) then you won’t be wowed by a lot of teams that have a chance to compete for a BCS National Championship, but there are a couple of teams good enough to throw a wrinkle or two in there.  But, before we go into depth let’s take a look at the football odds to win the ACC from BetUS Sportsbook.

Boston College +2500

Clemson +250

Duke +10000

Florida State +450

Georgia Tech +1200

Maryland +1400

Miami +350

North Carolina +800

North Carolina State +5000

Virginia +5000

Virginia Tech +250

Wake Forest +600

As you can see, Virginia Tech, Miami, Clemson and Florida State are all favored to win the conference and earn the automatic BCS Bid.  Let’s take a look at their chances, as long as some others.

Boston College ( +2500 at BetUS)

Senior Chris Crane will take over for the departed Matt Ryan, and he’ll have some big shoes to fill and not a lot of experience in doing it.  He might have troubles as last year the receiving corps took a lot of hits for not doing more, and the team’s leading returning rusher racked up 14 yards a year ago.  Defensively, seven starters are gone off last year’s squad.

Clemson ( +250 at BetUS)

It seems like the Tigers are always one of the best defensive football teams in the country and they only lost three starters on that side of the ball.  What has the Tigers favored to win the conference this year though is that their top two rushers in James Davis and CJ Spiller will return, along with Aaron Kelly’s 88 grabs and Cullen Harper’s efficient arm that threw for 27 touchdowns to only 6 picks.

Florida State ( +450 at BetUS)

I really don’t see why this team is so hyped heading into the season.  The offense looked terrible last year putting up only 23.3 ppg, good for 90th in the nation.  The defense was marginal at best as well, and lost five starters.  This is definitely a team I would recommend you stay away from.

Georgia Tech ( +1200 at BetUS)

This team isn’t being given much of a shot, but could be a dark horse.  They are going to have to adapt to a new coach as Paul Johnson comes over from Navy.  The Yellow Jackets have a decent amount of talent, but lost a lot of starters off of last year’s punishing defense and they won’t have a lot of experience on offense either.

Maryland ( +1400 at BetUS)

This team struggled to finish out the 2007 season, losing five of their last seven games.  The offense was pretty puke last year when they ranked 92nd in the nation.  The new offensive coordinator is going to try and install a West Coast offense, but we’ve seen how tough it is to put into place at the college level.

Miami ( +350 at BetUS)

Head coach Randy Shannon was able to sign some of the best talent in the nation for this season, but only three starters return on an offense that was fairly dismal a year ago.  The Hurriances were 5-6 a year ago and got beat up badly several times.  They have an early date against Florida in Gainesville which could just add to the embarrassment.

North Carolina ( +800 at BetUS)

This team looks promising under Butch Davis.  The ground game needs to provide some help to TJ Yates, who had to force too many throws which led to turnovers.  The schedule is pretty favorable to them as well with no Clemson, Wake Forest, or Florida State on their slate of games.

Virginia Tech ( +250 at BetUS)

Last year this team ended up with the conference title, but lost to Kansas in the Orange Bowl.  The defense continued the Hokie legacy by ending up 4th in the nation, but seven of their eleven starters must be replaced.  There is a lot of talent on offense at some of the skill positions, and with a platoon at quarterback with Tyron Taylor and Sean Glennon, who complement each other reasonably well, this team should probably get to the conference title game.

Wake Forest ( +600 at BetUS)

Riley Skinner completed 72% of his passes a year ago and has to be considered the top signal caller in the ACC.  His arm-strength is pretty weak, but he makes good decisions and fits this system well.  The defense has nine starters coming back from a year ago so it wouldn’t surprise us to see them as a contender if things go their way.

We don’t think Duke, Virginia, or NC State have much of a chance, and our bet is on Clemson to bring home the conference title.
