Aaron's 499 NASCAR predictions & Odds to Win
June 6, 2008
Okay racing fans its time to get strapped back in as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is back in action this week at the Aaron’s 499 at the famous Talladega Speedway. So while nobody wants to take a week off from racing, its not so bad when you get treated to an event like this. A race at Talladega is sure to bring excitement, as this track is simply a beast. While the goal of every driver is to win this weekend, they will also have to be on top of their game, as any slight mistake can lead to a big time crash here. This is what many people believe draws such a big fan base to this event, not only do the drivers have to be on their “A” game, they have to be a little bit lucky as well. In the last race leading up this event we saw Hendricks Motorsports driver Jimmie Johnson take home his first victory of the season. This might be the start of something good for Johnson and his team, as a Chevrolet has won 17 of the last 18 races at Talladega, and 6 of the last 8 have came by the drivers of the Hendricks Motorsports team. So with that said its time for our weekly 1-2-3 prediction at the Aaron’s 499.
1. Jeff Gordon 5-1 at Sportsbook.com
#24 Jeff Gordon is the defending champion of the Aaron’s 499, and currently has the most victories of any driver at Talladega with 6. Gordon is one of the big names that has yet to cash in with a victory this season. Gordon does have some quality races this season with three top 5 finishes, and the best showing coming at the Goody’s Cool Orange 500 where he was able to take home a 2nd place finish. We are willing to bet that what has happened this season won’t mean much at all to a guy who has simply dominated this track.
2. Jimmie Johnson 6-1 at Sportsbook.com
It’s hard to get away from a team that has just dominated this track over the last few years. Johnson seems to have shaken off the slow start to 2008 with 3 straight top 5 finishes, and capping it off with a victory last weekend at the Subway Fresh Fit 500. Johnson was dominant in 2007, and looks like he is on his way to getting back to the top in 2008. He currently sits 4th in the point standings and has made up some serious ground over the last few weeks. This is a great option, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he takes home another victory this week.
3. Ryan Newman 25-1 at Sportsbook.com
The driver of the #12 car is currently sitting in 12th place this year in the point standings, and could use a good showing here at Talladega. This might not be as big of problem as one might think, as Newman has had some pretty decent success here at this track. Though he has yet to take home a victory here, he does have three top 5 finishes, and is coming off two straight top 10 finishes. With 25-1 odds this week, Newman just might be the guy to take a chance on, as a win would mean a big payday for Newman and those who took a chance on him.
