2007 Virginia Tech Hokies College Football Picks & Predictions

June 6, 2008 | Posted By Larry Cook

Virginia Tech’s season depends on the progress of its quarterback and offensive line. The defense is always there, but inconsistent play from both of these positions had the Hokies unable to reach the ACC title game last year. There is still doubt regarding quarterback Sean Glennon, who threw just 11 touchdowns to 11 interceptions last year. The line had much to do with it, losing three All-ACC performers to graduation. But this ratio of TD’s to picks is not going to get it done in ACC play as we reach the 2007 season.

Teams with good defensive ends and complex blitz schemes such as Georgia Tech, Miami and Georgia exposed the line’s weaknesses. The rest of the offense is in good shape. Branden Ore rushed for 1,137 yards and 16 touchdowns last year. He’s durable, so Virginia Tech can definitely make him their centerpiece. Top receiver David Clowney graduated, but Tech returns flanker Eddie Royal, split end Josh Morgan, Justin Harper and Josh Hyman. All have been contributors or starters in each of the past three seasons.

Virginia Tech ranked 1st nationally in scoring defense (11.0 PPG), passing defense (128.2 YPG) and Total defense, yielding just 219.5 yards per game. Five of the front seven, plus two shutdown corners return. With linebackers Vince Hall and Xavier Adibi leading the way, the Hokies pitched four shutouts and allowed more than 13 points only 3 times in 13 games. Defense wins championships and this defensive effort is one you can expect from the Hokies again in 2007.

Chris Ellis led the Hokies with 4.5 sacks even though he battled injuries. A healthy Ellis could be one of the ACC’s best edge rushers. In the secondary, Brandon Flowers and Victor “Macho” Harris can match up with any receiver in the country. Flowers was an All-SEC pick last year, while Harris put out his best performance game in and game out in his first year as a starter. D.J. Parker returns at free safety, but the Hokies must find a new rover. Converted cornerback Kam Chancellor should be the answer here.

Virginia Tech football will be playing determined to try and brighten up the Hokie-land after the April shooting tragedy on campus. It’s hard to gauge what this will mean for the team and the community, but Hokie nation will stick together no matter what like they always do. For Tech to prevail in a packed ACC race, it will need a little more from Glennon at quarterback along with the poor effort the Hokies got from their offensive line last season. Look for running back Branden Ore to have a career year.
