2007 USC Trojans College Football Predictions & Picks

June 6, 2008 | Posted By Larry Cook

USC will be eager to hit the field after a 13-9 loss to UCLA dwindled any hopes of a National Championship. This team is loaded with talent and will be in National Championship contention once again in 2007. Senior quarterback John David Booty will have to work his magic this year without the benefit of wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett. The heir apparent is supposed to be junior Patrick Turner, but no one showed the ability of Jarrett in spring practice. As with many other positions on the team, there are prep All-Americans waiting to step in.

At receiver Vidal Hazelton and David Ausberry will be a few names to keep your ears peeled for. The Trojans will have about nine tailbacks competing for one spot, but no one emerged the talented pick in spring practice. This competition at running back will bring out the best of everyone, eventually allowing someone to step to the forefront. Joe McKnight draws comparisons to Reggie Bush because of his pass-catching ability and speed. Broderick Green might be the next LenDale White.

Whoever carries the ball has the luxury of two-time All-American tackle Same Baker and an experienced line that also returns starters Chilo Rachal and Drew Radovich. Coordinator Lane Kiffin left to become the Oakland Raider’s head coach, replace by quarterbacks coach Steve Sarkisian. The two have had much experience together calling plays, so the offense will not change significantly. The Trojans did work the shotgun formation more this spring to accommodate David Booty and his comfort zone.

The defense returns two All-American candidates on the line in Sedrick Ellis and Lawrence Jackson. This Trojan unit also returns the nation’s top group of linebackers, three top safeties and experienced cornerbacks. Now USC just needs to get back to taking the ball away again. The Trojans intercepted just 11 passes last season, the lowest mark in the Pete Carroll era and a nagging issue for a coach who prides himself on getting the other team to cough up the rock. This could be the fastest and best defense Carroll has had. That doesn’t even factor in the potential help from another stellar recruiting class.

USC is the nation’s No. 1 team based on Carroll’s coaching, a fast, experienced defense and a year’s experience for quarterback John David Booty. The Trojans are still going to have to earn it. The road games include trips to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oregon, Cal and Arizona State. But Carroll-coached teams are always up to the challenge with his savvy to motivate each individual on his squad.
