2007 Texas A&M Aggies Colelge Football Picks & Predictions

The Aggies lost three conference games last season by a total of six points. They will be hungry to return to the field in 2007 knowing they are not far from a very successful season. Texas A&M quarterback Stepehn McGee is ready to deliver the knockout punch this year. Senior center Cody Wallace and senior guard Kirk Elder, both first-team All-Big 12 selections last season, anchor what will be on of the most dominant offensive lines in school history.

McGee’s complete confidence in his line could make him an even more effective passer than last year when he completed as school-record 62 percent of his passes for 2,295 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also rushed for 666 yards on 146 attempts, making him a dangerous threat for any defense to try and defend.

McGee has plenty of receiving options, including senior wideout Earvin Taylor and a terrific tight end tandem in Martellus Bennett and Joey Thomas. As dangerous as the Aggies passing attack will be, it’s the running game that should truly strike fear into opposing defenses. The powerful Jorvorskie Lane is virtually unstoppable in short-yardage situations. He is a 274-pound load and converted a first down or touchdown 26 times in 29 attempts on third-down and fourth-down carries last year. Mike Goodson returns after being the named the Big 12′s Freshman of the Year by rushing for 847 yards and four touchdowns. His blazing speed and cutback ability make him tough to bring down in the open field.

The Aggies’ secondary improved over 70 positions over the course of a year nationally. With almost everyone back, the improvements should continue. The linebacker spot is no longer a key concern as junior college transfers Mark Dodge and Misi Tupe return for their senior seasons. This leadership on the defensive side of the ball is priceless. Dodge had 51 tackles last season with big-play ability and Tupe took down 54 tackles to earn Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year. Youngsters in sophomores Anthony Lewis and Matt Featherston are developing and will be ready to get into the action next season.

With all the talent in the secondary and linebacker positions, the Texas A&M Aggies appear to be loaded up front as well. Senior end Chris Harrington is to the defense what Stephen McGee is on offense. He is a fiery, hard-nosed leader. Tackles Red Bryant and Kellen Heard are monsters inside, while former reserves Cyril Obiozor, Michael Bennett and Henry Smith add tremendous depth and flexibility.

The Aggies have less holes to fill than most teams in the nation and are loaded with senior leadership and experience. The offense is balanced with the run and pass, able to attack slowly or with a quick burst. The defensive secondary is much improved, as is the rest of this unit as a whole. The Aggies’ 2007 success will ultimately hinge on their ability to survive on the road. First, they go to Miami in the non-conference schedule, then at Texas Tech, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Missouri in the Big 12. Had the Aggies grabbed a more favorable schedule, we feel Texas A&M could have been in line for a Big 12 championship this season.
