2007 Houston Texans NFL Picks & Predictions

June 6, 2008 | Posted By Larry Cook

Not many people are anxiously awaiting our 2007 Texans predictions, but this is a team that could surprise people and be competitive.  It seems like Gary Kubiak is actually turning this place around with an attitude and general outlook that seemed to be infusing itself with the team as the season ended.  It’ll be interesting to see how the addition of Matt Schaub at quarterback and the losses of David Carr and Eric Moulds in the passing game will affect the team.  The defense should get better as they have a lot of solid young players lining up on that side of the ball.

Schaub has been great in preseason games, but has not seen a lot of action as a starting quarterback.  There were a lot of teams interested in his services, and it’s surprising that Houston decided to get rid of Carr one season after passing on Vince Young, Matt Leinart, and Jay Cutler.  Carr needed to change scenaries anyway, but how good can Schaub be?  Houston decided to go out and get an aging running back whose good years are behind him in Ahman Greene.  Yet another interesting move since they passed on Reggie Bush in the 2006 draft.  The team also has Ron Dayne who was productive to end last season.  At wide receiver Houston has an All-Pro in Andre Johnson, but without any support he may not be as productive as he should be.  Kevin Walter is the other starter, but he has a total of 47 career receptions.  Jacoby Jones has some potential but he’s too raw to be a threat early in the year.

If this defenive line isn’t a force then it’s not because the team hasn’t wasted draft picks and money on it.  Mario Williams is hoping not to turn out to be a bust, and we actually expect him to make some big strides this season.  Travis Johnson has been disappointing to start his career and will need to step up if he hopes to save his job.  Amobi Okoye will try to be a force in the middle despite just turning 20 and Anthony Weaver is capable on the other side of Williams.  The linebacking corps are the best part of this defense, and the leader is second year pro DeMeco Ryans who is quick and could be one of the league’s best players this year after leading the NFL in solo tackles last season.  Shantee Orr and Morlon Greenwood were threats last year and will hope to keep improving this year.  The secondary is going to need help from the line so quarterbacks don’t have all day to pick them apart.  The safeties both hit hard as does corner Dunta Robinson.  Demarcus Faggins can make some big plays but sometimes has trouble giving up the deep ball.

With the Colts and Jags at the top of the division and the Titans making strides with Vince Young, it’s really tough to picture the Texans competing for the division or making the playoffs.  If you can’t see a team making the playoffs then it goes to the point that you would think 6 wins is more likely than 7.  However, this is a tough one and we are going to stay away from the Texans this year.  Our heart says there is no way Houston can get out of the basement, but looking at the team on paper shows potential.
