David Toms has played decent golf at times in 2007 with four top 10 finishes and his two wins in this Championship in 2003 and 2004 have put him among the favorites to win this week’s event. But we must also remember than Toms hasn’t played a tournament since the Crowne Plaza Invitational. At 15/1 odds the books are terribly overvaluing him this week. There’s no way that he has a better chance than Sergio Garcia who is showing better value at 20/1 odds. He has four top 10 finishes as well in 2007 and two top threes. He is coming off a solid week at the Memorial shooting a respectable seven-under par which just wasn’t good enough on a week when 17-under won it. This is a solid example of the books trying to goat you into a poor wager.
In my opinion Sportsbook.com has nailed the favorite, Vijay Singh, at 8/1 odds. The good thing here is that he is showing much better value than the usual PGA Tour favorite (Tiger Woods) would be. Singh has two wins in 2007 winning the Mercedez-Benz Championship and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He erased an awful showing at The Players by shooting a solid nine-under last week to tie for 15th. With Woods not in the field, expect his confidence to soar.
For those of you who are arguing for Phil Mickelson, I know you have a strong case as he comes in off a win at The Players, and played two solid tournaments leading up to that, but he hasn’t played in a competitive tournament for nearly a month. It’s going to be awfully tough for Lefty to come in cold and pick up right where he left off. We’ll have to fade Mr. Mickelson this week.
Adam Scott is coming off an impressive 14-under performance at the Memorial in which he shot a tournament-best score of 62 in the second round. He also has four top 10 finishes and two top threes. He is coming off back-to-back tournaments in the top six. Those numbers are enough to give bettors big eyes, but putting him on the same level as Lefty, the number two player in the world, is a definite overvaluing of him. Fade Scott as well.
After weighing the odds and the field, Vijay Singh appears ready to live up to the hype. Rarely do the books give you any value with the favorites in these PGA events, but getting Singh at 8/1 odds is the equivalent of getting the Red Sox as +150 dogs this season. We’ll take Singh to win the St. Jude Championship.
