2007 New Orleans Saints NFL Predictions & Season Preview
With our 2007 Saints predictions we had to keep in perspective just how great their season was in 2006. The team had only three wins in 2005, then brought in new coach Sean Payton, a guy with no head coaching experience. Payton remodeled the team by bringing in 26 new players and the results were a bunch of first in team history. First time they sold out the stadium on a season basis, first time they earned a bye in the playoffs, first time they hosted a divisional playoff game, and first time they made the NFC Championship. You can probably expect a letdown this year after such a massive over-achievement last year, but with the talent on this team expectations are still high.

The Saints couldn’t have expected to get more out of free-agent signee Drew Brees last year when he came in from San Diego and led the NFL in passing yards. He earned All-Pro honors and set team records in several statistical categories including total yards and passer rating. He’ll continue to thrive under Payton. At running back there is absolutely no better pair in the league than Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush. McAllister is the rusher who racked up 1,057 yards and 10 touchdowns while Bush set an NFL rookie record with 88 receptions and 742 receiving yards with eight total touchdowns. The team also has some able backups with Aaron Stecker and Antonio Pittman. At receive the team lost Joe Horn, but still has Marques Colston who was on the All-Rookie team a year ago, who should improve on his 70 catches and 1,038 yards if he doesn’t miss two games. New Orleans is loaded with speed at the position with Devery Henderson, Terrance Copper, and Robert Meachum all being speedsters.
The Saints gave up too many rushing yards, but have a decent pair of run-stoppers in tackles Brian Young and Hollis Thomas. The strength may be on the outside with Pro Bowler Will Smith and Charles Grant. Both are great pass rushers who can get to the quarterback. The team is deep at linebacker with Scott Fujita and Scott Shanle being playmakers in this system and Brian Simmons giving the team what they need in the middle. There is plenty of depth here as well. In the secondary the team has the talented Mike McKenzine and Jason David was brought in from the Colts. The safeties are Josh Bullocks from Nebraska and Roman Harper from Alabama. Both young guys who will have plenty of competition.
Logically it seems like the Saints are more likely to get back to 8-8 than they are to repeat last year’s 10-6 run. However, with a year under Payton, an improved defense and Bush growing into a more complete player this team will contend. Honestly their odds to win the NFC and Super Bowl are worth taking a strong look at, plus we are placing our money on the OVER 9 wins.
