2007 Washington Redskins NFL Predictions & Preview

Can Joe Gibbs bring our 2007 Redskins predictions out of the current tailspin and back to the days when he was first guiding Washington to Super Bowl titles?  We don’t think so.  The team racked up 11 wins, including a win in the playoffs back in 2005, but last year was the worst of Gibbs’s career at 5-11.  The defense was a struggle so the team went out and spent a lot of money bringing talent to that side of the ball.  The offense is going to be depending on Jason Campbell to progress to the next level.

The Redskins should have the most talented group of coaches of any team with Al Saunders and Gregg Williams being offensive and defensive specialists.  Both are going to be expected to get their guys producing better this season.  At quarterback the team benched Mark Brunell last November in favor of Jason Campbell., their No. 1 draft pick from 2005.  He has a strong arm, but needs to work on his touch.  It’s his team to lead, which is kind of scary since he’s so raw.  The key to the offense is with the ground game.  Not only do they have a Pro Bowler in Clinton Portis, but after Portis was hurt last season Ladell Betts set a six-game team record with 770 yards in his final six starts.  Santana Moss had a career year back in 2005, but was nearly worthless last season after being hobbled with hamstring injuries.  Brandon Lloyd and Antwon Randle El were added to the team last year to give Washington more depth, but both were disappointing and shouldn’t be much better this year.

The defensive line needs work with the only bright spot being Andre Carter last year, and he had a dismal start to the season.  Phillip Daniels and Cornelius Griffin are both old and getting worn down with injuries.  At lineback the team added London Fletcher who has been strong in his ten years in the league.  Marcus Washington is a talented strong-side linebacker but Rocky McIntosh doesn’t have a lot of experience on the weak side.  The secondary is the strength of the defense with Sean Taylor and Shawn Springs being elite type players.  LaRon Landry was viewed by many as the best pure athlete and defensive player in the draft and he will be starting by the end of the year.

The Redskins should worry some teams, but the team doesn’t have enough gas to contend in this loaded NFC East.  I’m staying away from this team and you can expect another losing season for Joe Gibbs and company.  8-8 seems like a stretch with Campbell leading the team, even with Portis and Betts carrying the load.
