The Preakness Stakes takes place the third Saturday in May each year and this Saturday we will be witnessing the 132nd running of this historic event. The Preakness is the second race of the Triple Crown series and this year Street Sense will be looking to race to a Preakness title to get a chance to become the first horse since Affirmed in 1978 to win the Triple Crown.

Although Street Sense will not be a good value bet, it’s going to be hard for even you long shot guys to leave him off your card. The simple fact that six of the last 10 Kentucky Derby Winners have also gone on to win the Preakness Stakes looks very good for Street Sense. When you consider that one of those 10 horses didn’t run in the Preakness after winning the Derby and that tragedy struck for Barbaro last year, his chances look even better. We also can’t overlook the fact that 67 race favorites of the 131 Preakness Stakes races have come in first.

Even though history appears to be on Street Sense’s side, I can’t help but to be scared of Hard Spun. Hard Spun was the place finisher at the Kentucky Derby striding out to a big lead before being caught in the home stretch. With Pimlico race course being a smaller track with shorter straightaways, I can’t rule out Hard Spun as a surefire contender. Hard Spun is known for jumping out to those big leads and he just may have enough to hold off Street Sense in this year’s Preakness Stakes.

Super Trainer, Todd Pletcher, who came up empty handed in the Kentucky Derby again, will enter King of the Roxy in the race. Some would say that Pletcher’s 0-for-26 Triple Crown race record makes him due. If King of the Roxy wasn’t good enough to get into Pletcher’s Derby lineup, I have to think that he won’t have what it takes to compete at the Preakness.

I’m also ruling out Teuflesberg, who finished 17th at the Derby. He could be the favorite among long shot supporters who will site Louis Quatorze as there explanation for their bet. Louis Quatorze raced to Preakness glory in 1996 after finishing 16th at the Derby.

I’m telling you right now that it’s going to be a battle to the finish between the top three Derby finishers, Street Sense, Hard Spun, and Curlin. Sign up today to see who we’re placing our win bet on.
