2007 Players Championship Golf Tournament Predictions

As much as I would like to go with a long shot showing great value like Masters champ Zach Johnson at 50/1 odds or defending champ Stephen Ames at 66/1 odds or even current world number two Jim Furyk at 25/1 odds, I have Tiger fever.

Tiger is due at Sawgrass. He hasn’t won the event since 2001 and I’m sure he’s heard plenty about Jack Nicklaus’ run of three Players Championship titles from 1974 to 1978. A win last weekend at the Wachovia Championship gives him great momentum heading in. Also, the fact that he did not hit his driver well at the Wachovia looks good for him this weekend as he will put the extra time in at the course in his practice rounds. Who better to pick to take home the biggest check out of this $9 million purse than the world’s money leader? And who better to pick on a course which has two of the toughest finishing holes out of any tour stop. While other golfers implode on the famed 17th Island hole at Sawgrass, watch Tiger get the better of it.

You might be thinking how hard is it to pick Tiger when he’s favored in every single tournament and clearly should be? Let me ask you this? How often has a golfer ever been favored over the entire field which is listed at 3/1 odds? If Tiger skips one year of winning a major tournament, he’s due. If he has skipped five years, as he has at The Players Championship, he is overdue.

Sure, only five golfers in history have ever won the event more than once. But Tiger is already more legendary than all of them with the exception of Nicklaus who he is gaining on quickly.

Phil Mickelson, Davis Love III because of his solid history in the event, and Vijay Singh should pose the biggest threat to Tiger. Lefty and Singh are the type of precision golfers that one must be to win on this stingy course, but ultimately neither is as hungry as the world’s number one. At 5/2 odds we don’t see much value in taking Woods, but we do see our best bet.
