2007 Oklahoma State Cowboys College Football Predictions

The Oklahoma State Cowboys feature one of the best trio’s of offensive skill players in the conference, if not the best. Quarterback Bobby Reid, running back Dantrell Savage and receiver Adarious Bowman will be a pleasure to watch all year long. Reid makes it hard for defenses to zero in on one area of the attack, which averaged more than 200 yards running and passing last season. Reid passed for 2,226 yards and a very high 24 touchdowns, while rushing for 500 yards and five scores.

Coach Mike Gundy plans on getting backup Zac Robinson into the action every game, too. Savage sped for 820 yards on just 126 carries, averaging a scary 6.5 yards per carry. Keith Toston has Savage’s back when he needs a breather and is a solid second-string option after carrying for 631 yards a year ago. Reid and Savage have loads of talent, but receiver Bowman is the star of the show.

Bowman put on an unforgettable show against Kansas last season, catching 13 passes for 300 yards and four touchdowns. There aren’t many better at going deep, as Bowman averaged 19.7 yards per catch last season. These three guys aren’t the only strong suits on offense either. Tight end Brandon Pettigrew has worked hard in the weight room to make himself an every-down player who can do whatever asked. He caught 24 passes for 310 yards and four scores last season.

The problem with the Cowboys falls with their defense. Oky State didn’t rank better than eighth in the conference in any of the major defensive categories. Now they have to replace key members of the front line. New coordinator Time Beckman leads the charge after coming over from Ohio State where he was a defensive assistant. Nathan Peterson is one to watch up front at end. He had 12 tackles for loss to go along with eight sacks this season. He is a definite preseason all-conference selection.

Marque Fountain had 13 tackles for loss in a reserve role at end and will be expected to contribute in big ways with regular playing time. Highly touted junior college transfer Tonga Tea will have a chance to play right away at tackle. There is much more experience in the back seven. Strong safety Andre Sexton led the team in tackles as a freshman with 79. Sophomore linebacker Patrick Lavine had 70 stops and will be a player to keep your eyes on. Lavine stepped in for Chris Collins last year, whose promising freshman season was basically cut in half because of an ACL injury. Collins should have enough rehab time to work himself back into the depth chart in the fall.

There is positive momentum around the program. Cowboy country has all the making of a breakthrough year, if anything else, one of the most explosive offenses in the country. This unit put up 35.2 points per game last season and we look for that number to even rise in 2007. You can expect shootouts. Now the Cowboys just have to win more of them.
