Let’s start in the AL East. Even though the Red Sox have cooled off some since their torrid start, I don’t see the Yanks catching the Bean Town bombers this time around. Boston currently holds an eight-game lead in the standings and has a much more solid pitching staff to close out the season. When the Yankees have been hot at the plate this season they have been successful, but when they haven’t their pitching has not been good enough to carry them through.

Minnesota made a great second half run to finish in the top spot in the AL Central in 2006, beating the Tigers by one game. This team has not produced the same kind of power numbers and their starting rotation has not been nearly consistent enough to make another such run. I see a two-team race in the Central between the Tribe and the Tigers with the Tigers coming out on top.

The A’s are terribly underachieving in the AL West at 13 games back in the division. This team has far too much talent in its starting rotation to be eight games below .500, but that is the reality. The Mariners have been a pleasant surprise this season, but they are going to have quite enough left in their tanks to challenge the Angels. Don’t be surprised if LA creates some more space and ends up taking this division by eight games or so.

The NL East presents us with a tight race as Atlanta, Philadelphia, and New York could all still win this division. It just depends on who gets hotter down the stretch. The Phillies are blazing hot right now, but they have been very inconsistent this season and I don’t see them ending up in the top spot. The Mets have the most talent in this division and we feel that they will win a tight race.

The NL Central Champs will be the Chicago Cubs in 2007. How many times have the Cubs and Bears won division titles in the same year throughout history? Not many is an easy enough answer. The Cubs have played better on the road than Milwaukee this season, and it is becoming more and more apparent that this Chicago Cubs pitching staff is one to be reckoned with again. Lou Pinnela’s fire is the difference maker.

The NL West will be won by San Diego Padres. There’s no doubt that the Dodgers have the most talented offensive lineup, but the Padres have the better starting pitching and pen which will be the difference maker down the stretch. The Diamondbacks and Rockies, who are right in the thick of things now, have struggled on the road and will trail off as their pitching isn’t nearly as good as the California squads.
