Tiger Woods is once again about an even money favorite to win the event. It’s been ten years since his magical run in which he broke 20 Masters records and tied six others, but last year he was defeated by Phil Mickelson, who seemed to be on his way to his own Grand Slam until being debunked at the US Open. However, with four green jackets already in his closet, you can bet he’ll be in the running once again, and the public will be all over him. We stay away from Woods in these events because they rarely show value for him.
So who does show nice value? We think Ernie Els is the way to go this year. He had a down 2006 season due to injuries and he should bounce back nicely. He’s one of those guys that from 2000-2004 never finished out of the top six in the tournament. He’s on the verge, loves this event, loves the course, and is our top choice for coming out on top.
If you are looking for a longer shot, try Padraig Harrington at 40-to-1 or better. We know he’s missed the cut at Augusta in two out of the last three years, and his best finish was fifth back in 2002, but he won twice in 2005 and has won nine times on the European Tour, finishing in the top three on the Order of Merit from 2001-2004. There are a lot of guys in the field, but many bettors won’t know this name, they should.
Personally we would stay away from Reteif Goosen, Sergio Garcia, and Adam Scott. These are all great players who do not seem to have what it takes to win at Augusta. The public will bet these lines down, and there isn’t any value in wagering on them to win.
