2007 Detroit Lions NFL Predictions & Season Preview

The 2007 Lions predictions from the InfoPlays staff unfortunately show more of the same, which is losing. Matt Millen has gone 24-72 as team president, which is one of the worst stretches in NFL history. The team is finally headed in the right direction with a disciplinarian as a coach and more of his players and coaches on staff. This will be a determinative year, if this year ends poorly then Millen is most likely getting the boot. The bad news is that last year’s team finished 3-13 and this year’s team isn’t going to be a lot better and will still probably be the worst team in the NFC.

The team is thin at quarterback with Jon Kitna being 34 and having more picks than touchdowns a year ago. In his defense the running game was poor and he didn’t get any time to throw. If he goes down the team is really going to struggle with third-year man Dan Orlovsky only haven thrown 17 passes in the NFL and rookie Drew Stanton. At running back the team should be situated, but last year three season-ending injuries took down almost everyone. This year the team went out and got Tatum Bell and TJ Duckett to add depth and Kevin Jones was growing in to one of the best running backs in the NFC before going down, but his health is a concern. At wide receiver the team is stacked, but not because of their four top 10 draft picks in the last five years at the position. Rogers and Mike Williams were busts, but Roy Williams was a Pro Bowler. Charles Johnson now has the chance to shine as well, plus Detroit has the NFC’s leader in receptions in Mike Furrey.
Defensively the team is solid at tackle but weak at the end positions. Shaun Rogers and Cory Redding are both guys that can make the Pro Bowl if they perform up to expectations. Don’t much of a pass rush from this group though. The linebackers have had problems staying healthy, and aren’t overly talented anyway. Teddy Lehman needs to live up to his potential from when he was drafted four years ago. Ernie Sims is the most talented of the bunch and should continue to get better in his second year. The secondary is the weakness of this poor defense. Dre Bly was their only playmaker but he didn’t fit the Tampa 2 scheme so he got shipped off. Daniel Bullocks will start at free safety and is the only defensive back we think shows any potential.

This team isn’t going to contend for the division, let alone the NFC or a Super Bowl any time soon. Personally I think they are going to be one of the worst teams in football and there is little to no way they get to 7 wins, so I’m going with the UNDER on the season win total in one of the strongest futures wagers of the season.
