2007 Johnnie Walker Golf Tournament Predictions

Despite the Nissan open also being in the same week, the 2007 Johnnie Walker Classic features some of the top names in golf. The location is in Phuket, Thailand which is the home of the Blue Canyon Country Club. This is Thailand’s most prestigious golf course and the perfect fit for the Johnnie Walker Classic. The course will draw the crowds needed for a great atmosphere just like it did as host to the 1998 Johnnie Walker Classic and as host to a skins game played in 2005. Retief Goosen has fond memories of this course and believes the Par 3′s on the back nine of the Canyon Course, particularly to the Island 14th green, will be a key to a successful weekend. “If the breeze blows there (at the 14th) you can be hitting a five iron in and it can be a tougher green to hit than the 17th at Sawgrass,” he said. “The 17th is also a very tough par three.” The short par four 13th, with its drive over the canyon, is another feature hole while the 18th provides a challenging finish, says Goosen. “Overall the whole course is good. It is a good driving course.”

Goosen won the Johnnie Walker Classic in 2002, after leading by a record 13 strokes after 54 holes at Lake Karrinyup Country Club in Australia, and will be aiming to match fellow South African Ernie Els and Tiger Woods by becoming a multiple winner of the event. And Goosen’s victory in The Commercialbank Qatar Masters, sealed with a stunning eagle putt on the last which was voted European Tour Shot of the Month for January, shows he is on top of his game. He is listed as an 8/1 favorite to win this event.

The three names at the top of the linesmakers’ lists are Ernie Els, Goosen, and Adam Scott. These guys will light it up for the fans and you can expect all three of them to be around the top of the leaderboard come Sunday. Els is the favorite with 4/1 odds to win the tournament. World Number Six Els, winner in the 1997 and 2003 Johnnie Walker Classics, returns to Blue Canyon looking to erase the memories of nine years ago when he lost to Woods in the play-off. Also competing from the world’s top ten is Australian Adam Scott at 11/1 odds, the World Number Four and winner of the Johnnie Walker Classic in 2005 at Pine Valley Resort in Beijing, while Canadian left-hander Mike Weir, the 2003 Masters Champion, will be making his debut in the event with 32/1 odds.

We believe Retief Goosen is at the top of his game and we’re taking him to win it all this weekend. He remains one of the most consistent players on tour and his cool-headed demeanor keeps him in the match even when things aren’t going his way. He’s a steady grinder and his play from tee to green is a beautiful thing to watch. He is familiar with the Blue Canyon Country Club and knows his way around the course as well as any player in the field. This is Retief’s year to compete for the world’s #1 ranking with the likes of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Tune in on Sunday to see Goosen hold up the trophy at the 2007 Johnnie Walker Classic.
