2007 Philadelphia Eagles Predictions & Season Preview

There are a lot of people riding Philadelphia this year, but our 2007 Eagles predictions will find them slightly less talented than the Cowboys, though most likely the team will make the playoffs. This team has been nearly as dominate as the Pats have been in the new millennium, the only difference is that they have not won a Super Bowl. I don’t see that changing this year, but the team is on it’s way down as their window of opportunity is probably closing. The team picked up a talented linebacker in Takeo Spikes, but lost depth in Jeff Garcia and at corner with Rod Hood. The tam also will be without Shawn Barber and Donte Stallworth.

Philadelphia is a team you know is going to contend while Andy Reid is at the helm. He is the winningest coach in Eagle history and has kept his coaching staff pretty much intact. He kept his team believing even after they started off 5-6 last year. The Eagles have a 5-time Pro Bowler under center in Donovan McNabb, but the trouble has been keeping him healthy as he has lost significant time to injury in 3 out of the last 5 years. The team seems to also keep a decent stable of backups and this year is no different with AJ Feeley and Kelly Holcomb. Brian Westbrook is one of the most talented backs in the league and is the real leader of this offense. The trouble is he isn’t always the most stable back. The Eagles won’t have much talent at receiver with Reggie Brown being the only real standout. The offensive line though is quite talented and should help keep McNabb protected.

The Eagles have talent up front on defensive but that hasn’t translated into much production. Jevon Kearse was signed to be real pass rushing threat but he hasn’t had more than 9 sacks since 2001 and was out most of last season with a torn ACL. Brodrick Bunkley was drafted in the first round of 2006 to help stop the run, but after holding out he never got caught up to speed. Darren Howard was a disappointment last year, and Philly will need more out of him when it comes to rushing the passer. The linebacking group last year was weak for the Eagles and that is why they did so poorly against the run. Signing Spikes should help but who knows if he will be back to his Pro Bowl form from years ago. The secondary is a real strength of the team and that is why they have done so well against the pass. Well, the secondary and the fact that teams don’t have to pass when they can run at will. Dawkins and Sheppard are both Pro Bowlers, but Dawkins is getting up there in age. Sheldon Brown was inconsistent at times a year ago.

I really don’t know what to think of this team but for the wager I would go with the UNDER 9 wins simply because an 8-8 season is much more likely than a 10-6 one. 8-8 does seem to be right on the number however. I think the Cowboys win the division and since the Eagles couldn’t get it done as the favorites, I don’t see them winning the NFC or Super Bowl as underdogs.
