2007 Kansas City Chiefs Predictions & Season Preview
Don’t expect another playoff run with our 2007 Chiefs predictions. This team had a lot of work today in the off-season, and while they addressed some problems and got younger, the team is still a ways away from being competitive in this tough division. The pendulum has swung from the pass heavy, offensive minded squad who scored as many points as anyone under Dick Vermeil, and in is the run-first, grind it out, defensively minded style of Herm Edwards. The result was a 9-7 record and a playoff berth, but a quick exit in a loss to the Colts.
Trent Green won’t be running the offense this year, so the team is already down at the position from a year ago. Brodie Croyle is the man Kansas City wants to take over for the future, but if he isn’t ready then the Chiefs will trust Damon Huard with the job. Huard went 5-3 replacing Green last year and many fans thought he should have kept the job when Green came back. Larry Johnson is one of the best running back’s in the game, but he had 416 carries last season. How will that wear and tear show this season? Kansas City also has Michael Bennett to spell LJ, but he’s going to have to stay healthy in order to split carries. The team is struggling at receiver as well with their top two targets getting up there in age. Tony Gonzalez had 73 catches and 900 yards a year go, but he’s lost a step. Eddie Kennison is 34 yet the best wide out the Chiefs have.
The defensive front four is led by Jared Allen, but he will be facing a four-game suspension to start the season and was unhappy with his contract. At the other end spot is Tamba Hali, who was a terror last year in his rookie season. At tackle there is Alfonsso Boone and Ron Edwards who can stop the run but can’t get any pressure on opposing quarterbacks. The team has spent some time in the draft stocking up, and these youngsters should see time this season in order to prove themselves. Linebacker is a solid position for this team as long as everyone stays healthy. Donnie Edwards comes over from San Diego and Napoleon Harris comes over from Minnesota. Both will provide much needed help to Derrick Johnson who still hasn’t developed into the threat he was at Texas. The cornerback position is locked down by two aging veterans in Ty Law and Patrick Surtain, but if the Chiefs don’t get more of a pass rush neither can be as productive as their potential. At safety Kansas City has a pair of hard hitting second year guys in Bernard Pollard and Jarrad Page.
The Chiefs can easily get to eight wins if everything goes their way, but they could easily digress to six if things don’t. When it comes to finding the value, we think that 7 wins are more likely than 9, so we are going to take the UNDER. When looking at the odds to win the division, conference, or Super Bowl, we are going to take a pass with our wagers on Kansas City as there is better value out there.
