2007 Denver Broncos Predictions & Season Preview
June 5, 2008
Progress will be made this year with our 2007 Broncos predictions. The team went out and made a lot of improvements from a team that in 2006 went 9-7 and underachieved. Halfway through the year you could tell that they felt they didn’t have what it took to win a Super Bowl, so they were content in missing the playoffs in order to develop Jay Cutler and he appears to be everything they thought he could be. The team had plenty of tragedy in the off-season with Damien Nash collapsing at a charity basketball game and passing away soon after, and Darrent Williams being shot and killed hours after the team lost their final game, thus ensuring they would miss the playoffs. Now they have Travis Henry and Dre Bly, so it’s do or die time yet again in Denver.
The Broncos think they have their man of the future in Jay Cutler. Cutler has a cannon for an arm and showed great poise in trying to lead Denver down the stretch in the midst of a playoff race. After dealing away Jake Plummer, Denver went out and signed Patrick Ramsey to back up Cutler. At running back the Broncos decided not to just rely on the committee approach this season, signing Travis Henry in what was the division’s biggest free agent move. This guy will rack up the yards since less talented players had no problem doing so. Javon Walker is a Pro-Bowl type receiver who should be even better this year after coming off injury. Brandon Stokley will have to recover from last year’s Achilles injury, Rod Smith has one foot in the grave, and two second year players will all be fighting for time.
The Broncos are aged at end with Ebenezer Ekuban and Kenard Lang both getting up there, and they are going to have to hold off rookies Tim Crowder and Jarvis Moss. Alvin McKinley and Gerard Warren need to step it up in the inside. At linebacker the team lost Al Wilson, who was the leader of the defense. Ian Gold is a smart guy who can make plays on the outside and DJ Williams is poised for a breakout year after moving to middle in order to replace Wilson. The secondary is the heart of this defense though, even with the death to Williams. Champ Bailey is hands down the best cornerback in the league, and he’s being coupled with Dre Bly, a guy who has made his share of Pro Bowls, so it’s going to be tough to throw on this duo. At safety John Lynch and Nick Ferguson are both getting up there in age, but seem to have plenty left in the tank.
The Broncos are a team that we feel are going to make the playoffs and possibly contend. The team is going to go as far as Cutler and the defensive front seven can take them. Adding Henry will take heat off the passing game, and we think with Kansas City and Oakland down that 10 wins is probable. We also like the value they are showing with the odds to win the Super Bowl and the AFC so give Denver a look.
