2007 Big East College Football Predictions
The Big East has three clear-cut candidates. In our eyes, West Virginia leads the way after falling short of a Big East title last season. They will come out more motivated than ever behind QB Pat White and RB Steve Slaton, the best 1-2 punch in the nation. Road trips to Rutgers and South Florida are a concern, but if the Mountaineers can get by those two squads, we don’t see West Virginia losing a single game all season. There is enough experience and talent on this team to make a national championship run.

Louisville will be the Mountaineers’ biggest threat with the Big East’s best passing game in ’06. Brian Brohm leads a passing attack that could be even better this year. Losing coach Bobby Petrino to the NFL will have an impact, it just depends on how much. These Cardinals could be better than the team that finished 6 th in the national last year, but not good enough to get ahead of West Virginia. Rutgers is a scary team in the Big East led by RB Ray Rice and DT Eric Foster. These two lead the most talented group of guys in school history. Tight end and linebacker, strengths last year, are major worries now. The Scarlet Knight has eight home games and anything less than a 10-win season will be a disappointment.
South Florida has a talented QB in Matt Grothe and a heralded RB recruit in Mike Ford to work with. The Bulls’ schedule looks very dangerous though with Auburn joining their slate along with three Top-25 teams from the Big East. This is a sure-fire bowl team that could be a sleeper in the conference title chase if many things go their way. Cincinnati football has 15 returning starters and a reasonable schedule that would appear to bring a bowl game to the Bearcats in 2007. Cincinnati can’t seem to produce points and that will all have to change offensively if they are to be successful. The defense will be there again to lead this squad.
Head coach Dave Wannstedt keeps stockpiling good, young talent to the Pittsburgh football program. The Panthers will be without NFL draftees in Tyler Palko, H.B. Blades and Ddarrelle Revis. Even with these studs the Panthers only finished 6-6 last season. For Connecticut Football, RB Donald Brown II showed star potential as a redshirt freshman last year. There is still too much uncertainty at the quarterback position for the Huskies to have a standout season though. Syracuse football will suffer their third straight losing season for the first time in 25 years as a bottom feeder of the Big East conference. An experience offensive line should help new QB Andrew Robinson gel, but there are too many young, untested players taking over in too many key positions. The Big East will be won by West Virginia, but this is a conference that is always filled with upsets and there should be many more in 2007.
