Brigham Young University and the University of Oregon will battle it out in the 2006 Las Vegas Bowl.  The game will be featured at 8 EST on ESPN live from Las Vegas, Nevada and sponsored by Pioneer PureVision.  BYU had a surprising season in which they went 10-2 and a perfect 8-0 to finished first in the Mountain West Conference.  Oregon was slightly disappointed with their 7-5 season and 4-5 record in Pac 10 play.

This game will feature the offensive side of the ball with the 5th ranked team in total offense in the Cougars from BYU.  They have averaged 458 yards per game while their opponents from Oregon have put up 436 YPG, good for 8th in the nation.  Both teams have made appearances in this bowl in the past, with Oregon beating down Air Force 41-13 in 1997 and BYU losing last year 35-28 to California.

BYU is going to have to break their bowl jinx in order to come out on top.  The team hasn’t won in the post-season since the Cotton Bowl in 1996, and are 7-16-1 all-time in the bowls.  Sam Boyd Stadium has been good to the Cougars though, going 7-2 which includes two appearances in 90’s WAC championship games.  The team is the first ranked school to play in this bowl as they come in as the 19th-ranked team in the nation.

Oregon was ranked as high as 11th this season, but lost their last 3 games to end the season and are now out of the rankings.  The team started as a 6-point underdog but due to heavy action the line has dropped to 3.  The difference we feel is that Oregon is disappointed to be here, while BYU feels like they have been overlooked and has something to prove.  We are going to have to go with BYU minus the points tonight, but have a better feeling about the total of this one.  If you want to enjoy our college bowl picks, sign up for a package today.
