2006 Boston Red Sox Predictions & Season Preview
The 2006 Boston Red Sox predictions show that they have put themselves in good position to make another run at a World Series title. They may have lost center fielder Johnny Damon to their division rivals, the New York Yankees, but they picked up a strong number 2 hitter in Mark Loretta from San Diego and a Cy Young quality pitcher in Josh Beckett from Florida. Add those 2 to the mix with a healthy Curt Schilling, David Ortiz, and Manny Ramirez, and this year’s Boston Redsox are looking pretty good. Futures bettors will want to give this team strong consideration.
When it comes to betting on the Boston Redsox on a day to day basis, there are a few things you need to know. The Bosox are one of the most dominant home teams in all of baseball. They have gone 162-81 at Fenway over the last 3 seasons and I don’t see their success at home changing any time soon. But as you might expect, they aren’t nearly as good on the road. Part of this is due to the fact that they play in the toughest division in baseball which is only getting tougher as the Toronto Blue Jays continue to improve.
The books are well aware of Boston’s success at Fenway so they try to trap bettors. When faced with a -243 line with Josh Beckett on the hill at home, for example, bettors are more likely to only wager a small amount because of the juice. But if the Redsox are just -125 favorites on the road, bettors are more likely to load up in this situation. The books are more than willing to take small defeats at home when they know that they can make their money back when big market teams such as Boston go on the road. This is a trap you are going to want to try to avoid. Instead, look for spots to go against the Redsox when they are on the road. You should be able to pick up some nice profits by taking home underdogs when going against them.
Another wager to consider this season is playing Boston on the Total line. They have one of the highest powered lineups in the league and teams rarely hold them down for an entire game. If one of their aces is on the mound it might not be the safest bet as Schilling and Beckett will shut down their fair share on teams this season. But with their other starters such as Wakefield, who aren’t quite as dominant game after game, we will find some value in playing overs on this team.
One big question that will sort itself out as the season progresses is: just how valuable was Johnny Damon to this ball club? If new additions Coco Crisp and Willie Mo Pena can become consistent contributors the Boston faithful might bid him good riddance, but if they can’t, Redsox fans might think this is a new wave of the curse of the Bambino.
